Did you make sure the 7940 is properly configured for SIP protocol configurations?
Here is an explanation about this at 3CX:

If that doesn't do the trick, perhaps the 7940 is just defective...

voip causing network issues

Hi everyone,

I'll start by saying this is my first attempt at VoIP service.

I recently setup a VoIP SIP phone at home through my employer. The problem I'm running into is with the problems it is causing with the rest of my network.

I attempted to install the phone (cisco 7940) through my Linksys WRT54G router. I had multiple problem sand was never able to get the service to work. After doing some research I read of others that we having problems using VoIP through this router. One of the problems I had with the router is that when I plugged in the network cable from the phone to the router it would cause a complete shutdown of accessing the internet on all the computers in my network. I even tried using port forwarding and insuring that any port that was recommended be open was open

I decided to purchase a new router with hopefully better results. I purchased a D-Link (DIR-628) and went though the install and also made sure I setup port forwarding. With these changes everything worked fine and I had great call quality and no network or internet interference. The next morning I wake up and try and use the phone/internet and I begin to have intermittent problems. Through trouble shooting I find that it is the phone. If I have the phone connected to the network it shuts everything down to the internet. However, the second I unplug the phone everything is working fine and I have connectivity to the internet

Just for background. I'm using the router as a DHCP router. I've checked with my ISP and they do not have any port blocking and do not have any conflicts on their side. I've gone through troubleshooting with the VoIP provider and they have exhausted their troubleshooting. I've even tried a replacement phone from my employer to see if it was a hardware issue. All to no avail

If anyone has ever seen this before of has any thoughts your help would be appreciated

thanks
