Dial Pulse to Touchtone DTMF Converters

Created by: jht2,Last modification on Tue 08 of May, 2007 [22:21 UTC] by pyrosama
Many VOIP devices with FXS ports do not support traditional rotary dial phones.
One possible solution (untested) is a Dial pulse to DTMF (Touchtone) converter between the rotary dial phone and the VOIP FXS port

Example:

  • Dial Pulse Phone <-----> Pulse to DTMF converter <-----> VOIP FXS port on Sipura 2000

Some possible choices:
  • TelSoft VOIP Pulse To Tone Adapter (Plug and Play)
  • Mitel Smart-1 dialer (requires programming)
  • Sandman PULSE TO TONE CONVERTER
  • Panasonic KX-TA624 hybrid key system
    • Factory-default configuration will convert pulse dialing on an extension to DTMF on an outgoing CO port. Unit supports 10 or 20 pps dials.
    • Note: Early model KX-TA624 units tend to spontaneously reboot when ringing old-style electromechanical ringers. This seems to be related to inductive spikes rather than power consumption. The late-model KX-TA624-5 does not have this problem.

Known to work, tested:
  • LPT-300 - Pulse to Tone converter - http://www.dialerbuddy.com/lpt300.htm Approx $50
    • Thoughts on this: This is a simple unit. Do not put this in line where the upstream carrier supports both pulse and dtmf, as that will register double-digits dialed. It works flawlessly otherwise.

333UTStarCom Ian-02ex works with rotary!

by markosjal, Tuesday 04 of December, 2007 [21:22:04 UTC]
I have an UTStarCom ian-02ex that was originally from Lingo. I discovered by accident that it does rotary dialing with no problems. I will be connecting it permanently to a 1960s vintage rotary wall phone soon.

333TelSoft Converters

I bought one of these - the carriage outside the US exceeds the cost of the unit - BEWARE they only send by UPS - cost US$53.95 for the unit plus US$56.00 carriage and the UK Customs charge import tax on the total price !!

They also produce versions for use with the New Zealand reverse pulse dial and another for the Swedish 'reverse' pulse dial.

Can anyone provide programming suggestions for the Mitel Smart-1 to act as a passthrough pulse to DTMF converter? The programmingappears quite complex.

Mitel Smart-1 dialer = $18?

Now the website says $35.95, surely it hasn't gone up THAT much in a year

333What works and what doesn't.....

by MrKenmore, Saturday 02 of July, 2005 [02:54:03 UTC]
I have done extensive experimentation on this subject. I have Vonage and the Linksys RT31P2 adapter. The pulse to tone converter from Sandman does not work. The Mitel Smart-1 does indeed work. It does take some programming and an RS232 cable will help tremendously. All programming can be done through hyperterminal. Be advised that the downloadable manual from dialerbuddy website is for a later model. The manual is 2000 and the software on the machine I received is 1991. So some things are different. You can also do a whole bunch of other things with the Mitel. Definitely worth it. Good luck and keep those rotariy phones alive.
