Details
The natural evolution of PCI based telephony boards is to have Ethernet as the network interface instead of a PCI interface that requires a driver interface to work with the application - effectively making a Asterisk Blade. In this way the adapters can work with ANY SIP based application. This will greatly simplify the time to market and general appeal of internal cards in general.
In June 2009 Positron Telecommunication Systems Inc started shipping the first of this kind of Asterisk Blade and now has a full portfolio to address the business market:

No lengthy process to install Linux, Asterisk, Zap
