Megaco
Megaco was jointly developed by the IETF and the ITU. H.248 is the ITU name for Megaco.
Megaco was developed from MGCP and as a result is very similar.
Protocols like Megaco and MGCP are used when the MG Media Gateway function is separated from the MGC Media Gateway Controller/Softwitch. Megaco is used by the MGC to setup and control media streams (like voice) through the MG.
