Zultys phones

VOIP phones, media gateways and softphones.
Their LIPZ4 Linux softphone is free.

How to configure Asterisk for LIPZ4 1.3.11

The cheap (?) ZIP 2 phone ($100) comes without any display, but all other typical features like speakerphone (not full duplex!), voicemail indicator, hold, conference, transfer. STUN and UPnP support for operating the phone behind NAT is apparently provided as well (documentation error on the Zultys web site?). Paging support is available it seems (= announcement through the speaker).

Next to a display, instant messaging and a 4-port switch the ZIP 4x4 ($350) includes encryption, a feature rarely found in IP phones. However STUN, UPnP and voice compression are missing (g.711 codec only). From their web site:

Does the ZIP 4x4 support voice encryption?
Yes. The ZIP 4x4 can use RTP Secure and AES encryption to transport voice traffic in a secure manner. Users can engage this function before or during a call by pressing the Encrypt button on the phone."

A test report for the 4x4 can be found here:

A free Linux softphone was announced in Feb 2004

333ZIP 4x4 VLAN problem has been fixed

by aavex, Thursday 28 of September, 2006 [02:19:14 UTC]
By upgrading your ZIP 4x4 to 1.4.9 vlans work correctly with mixed tagged and untagged ports. I have deployed over 100 of the 4x4s using mixed tagging on Netgears FSM7326p and every thing work great. Voice on one vlan and data on the other. Just for the record, I spoke with an engineer about this problem, giving him a detailed account of what the problem was in the morning, and by the late afternoon he had beta code for me to try out.

333Zultys 4x4 VLAN problem

by jmproffitt, Thursday 13 of July, 2006 [18:53:04 UTC]
For the record, folks, the 4x4 has a "bug" in it (according to Zultys tech support) that prevents the 4x4 from accurately working in a mixed tagged and untagged VLAN environment. So the manuals and the promo materials are WRONG — the phone cannot properly handle VLAN tagging. It's either all-tagged, or all-untagged and that's it.

Don't bet on Zultys fixing this — it's probably burned into the hardware and unfixable.

By contrast, the newer 2x2 series does VLAN tagging and untagging correctly.

@Dave:
Zultys phones will only accept numbers for a secret. Letters and other alphanumerics won't work.

3334X4 - Sort Of...

by lostdave, Monday 12 of December, 2005 [22:55:26 UTC]
I have a 4 X 4 sort of working.

The only way I can get them to register is by not using a secret in sip.conf.

I can't get it to pull it's cfg file from the tftp server, still working on that bit.

We were testing some Zultys phones - the 4x5 worked fine, but we had some problems with the 4x4. Has anyone else got the 4x4 working fine?
