My guess is that my Magic Jack Plus is non-functional. Power supply is apparently dead and it looks like it took the Magic Jack with it. Lights up and the computer recognizes something is there when plugged into the USB port but no software opens and it will not connect a phone. Tried to find troubleshooting information on their site but there is none. At least nothing helpful. Decided to order a new one. Tried twice. No idea if none, one, or two are ordered. There has been no confirmation email sent. I would just go out and buy another but then maybe I will have three. What a sucky company. You may buy one and be fairly content considering the price. I was. Now? Not so much. Oh yeah, if you like to talk, the Magic Jack service will hang up at 1 hour without warning. Does not affect incoming calls and Magic Jack customer service will not admit this

Magic Jack is very inexpensive and worked well when I first bought it in 2010. Over the years it has gotten worse to the point that it does down once/day for me now. I don't recommend it. Also, their customer service is lousy

MagicJack Plus -- never worked properly

The Bad:

My original [and only] magicjack plus device was faulty upon receipt. The ports did not hold connections and therefore the cables were never well seated. I made multiple calls to MagicJack customer service, only to be told I would have to pay for a new device. So I bundled the whole thing in a ball of tape. Over the last few years, the device intermittently did not work and became unreliable. Last week I was no longer able to receive incoming calls [although the calls did go into the MagicJack voice mail box] and despite the fact there was no dial tone, I was able to complete outgoing calls as long as they did not require using the touch pad on the phone. I contacted support again and was told they would 'check into it' soon. When asked to define 'soon' I was told to be patient as I would be receiving an email in 24 to 48 hours -- that was 3 days ago and I have yet to received an email. Today the magicjack quit working entirely. Lucky for me, last week I contacted another VOIP carrier and will be transferring my telephone number to a dependable service. Unfortunately, MagicJack has refused to release the port to the new carrier [so I can keep my phone number]. After a chat with MJ customer service regarding this issue, I was again told to be patient and they would 'look into it' in a couple of days. That chat too, took place several days ago and according to my new service carrier the port has still not been released. I can only state that you do get what you pay for. Before you buy into this service, ask yourself if the aggravation is worth the price

Works better than Vonage and it the price is much cheaper 100 for the magicjack and it includes 5 years of service. Unbeatable price, I like the magic jack phone app. I never have any problems with the quality. Works perfect. I also transferred my old Vonage number to my magicjack and have that forward to my cell. Before Vonage I had that number with ATT. I had the number since 1995 so I did not want to lose it. Customer service is like any other company. If I have questions I chat with them on the website. They are fast and reliable

Terrible choice. Regret ever getting involved with these people. MagicJack was a technical headache from the beginning, never properly worked. Customer service is very poor, don't know their products and make refunds a total nightmare. Technical service only accepts live chat NO PHONE CALLS .... even though they are a phone company. $60 wasted. If you're ready to throw money away or deal with huge headaches give them a try, otherwise move on!

This service is very dependent on your internet service. I have FIOS and I rarely have problems with MagicJack calls. Sometimes, after 20+ mins of talk, it will drop the call. I have noticed that sometimes sending a fax thru MagicJack doesn't work very well. I've not had to contact service since I initially got the device 3 years ago. No problems with the hardware or the service. I recommend

It sounds like a great deal and maybe for some it it. But for me it has be very frustrating. I have tried for a year to get consistent service to work and it has let me down over and over. Sometimes it works fine as intended and at other times it simply won't work. Often a call can come in but I can not call out... at times when I really need it to work it has stopped working all together. Yes, it's a great price but only on the days it decides to actually work. The rest of the time it is a total piece of crap. It would be interesting to read my blood pressure on those non-working days...LOL. I am definitely starting my search for an alternative.... which will not be some overpriced BS like ATandT. Maybe someday MJ will be a great value but presently it may give me a stroke or heart attack; and that is not a good value

An absolutely rubbish company. Try and dial any of their customer service numbers - THEY DON"T WORK! So your only choice is live chat - and they'll just close the chat on you to get you gone. Took 3 weeks of contacting customer service to get my number out of their hands so I could transfer it to another provider

The Bad:

I have used MajicJack for over 5 years and love it. However when you call them (844)866-2442) the customer support staff have horrendous english and are very hard to understand. They tell me that Jan 2, 2015 an email was sent to all subscribers informing them of a new fee that they will be charging. It is for a "phone number service". I was told to read the subscriber agreement. I asked for a copy of this email and was informed that one could not be provided. No where in the document does it tell you about this new "fee". My subscription is good until August 2023, but i need to renew the number each year for $10., and now have to pay $110 for a "phone number service". Given they are sneaky bastards, I am pissed off and thinking about throwing it away.

I've had magic jack for over 6 years

The Good:

The Bad:

With so many negative reviews, I thought I'd write a fair one. I have had magic jack service for over 6 years, I initially took the plunge because my brother had the service and was happy with it. Magic Jack is only going to be as good as your internet service. I have high-speed, reliable internet through Atlantic Broadband and I have great phone service with Magic Jack. It is not perfect, it does take 1-2 seconds to connect (so don't say "hello" to fast or the other person won't hear you). I would say that about 2-3% of the calls have static for no known reason (hang up and call back and it's usually fine). I really wish I could block specific numbers on Magic Jack, but it is not an available feature. The call forwarding does work really well though. My service is always reliable (until the devices start to go bad- see below). My biggest complaint about Magic Jack is that the devices never last more than 2 years. I purchased my 3rd device (Magic Jack Express) last year. My first two devices started overheating and dropping calls after about 2 years. You need to count that into the overall cost of using Magic Jack. I don't use many of the features available, I just use it as a house phone and occasionally forward calls to my cell phone. Overall I am satisfied with Magic Jack for the price, I wouldn't have kept it for 6 years if I wasn't satisfied

Do not recommend this ..The quality of line service static and noise is terrible.. On either end people can not hear.. To receive support you can wait 30-40 minutes only to be cut off saying call back later. Price may be reasonable but the service and the quality of transmission is unacceptable

$30 charge to port out and $13.95 warranty replacement charge after only 3 weeks

The Good:

The Bad:

I started having trouble with my Magicjack after only three weeks. You can not get service over the phone, only chat. The first day I tried, I typed with them for SEVEN HOURS with only a 45 minute break. They only fixed some of the problems but still would not authorize a replacement. After three or four more hours and several unsuccessful attempts to fix it they finally said they would replace it if I paid $13.95. When I ported my number out from them they charged me an additional $30 plus tax to port out to another carrier. Instead of Magiicjack, buy a Obi voice modem and use Google voice for free (except for the port in fee

1) permanent noise, 2) interrupting voice sound, 3) additional payment for normally free numbers, 4) no customer service over the phone - only by chat, 5) no forwarding calls thru the phone only thru internet, 6) if you forwarded calls from your land phone to your cell you cannot call from your cell to your land phone

Save your money. In this case, you get what you pay for! They charge you yearly to import your number. Then when you decide to go with a different provider, they charge you a fine for importing thje number to the new carrier. Their customer service is awful! The sound quality is poor, and there is a delay whenever you answer a call. You can't hear the caller for several seconds. You lose service frequently, more often than you have service

Fine if it works, but often does not. No phone support/Windows only.

The Bad:

It all was said above. Great if it works, does not too often. No phone support, online chat only. You have to have a computer with Windows in order to configure/update the Magic Jack. Technical support makes you do the same troubleshooting over and over again, most times with no satisfactory results. I would have loved to keep the unit, but it is just aggravating with all the interruptions. Some do not have this issue, well, try it for yourself

I had ATandT. it got too expensive and retention didn't have any options. I thought I'd give this a try. If you want poor quality sound, iffy service, most of your calls to go unanswered by you, this is the answer for you. If you want clear sounding calls, and you want the option to answer the call yourself, this is not for you. I have fast internet, so I thought how bad could it be? It's bad. If someone does get through to me, I have to apologize because the caller can't hear me well. That's if the caller gets through. Be very cautious. If you need reliable service, DON'T get Magic Jack. MAGIC jACK - NOT WORTH ANY PRICE

Posted:
Sound Quality Reliability Features Customer Service Price Overall User Rating
The Good:

The Bad:

For no particular reason, my magic jack began to send all incoming calls to voice mail. I contacted tech support online and after four hours or so, they decided the unit I had was defective and told me I had to purchase a new device for $25.00. I did so, but when it arrived and was installed, the same problem persisted. After another 5 ours on the computer, the techs were unable to fix the problem Due to the way the technical support operates, I had chats with a dozen techs, and every time something had to rebooted, I lost the connection the that tech and had to start over with another tech. After another 5 hours, nothing got accomplished as every time it was "fixed," 15 minutes later it would again not receive calls. I contacted the corporate offices and talked with a manager who assured me that she would have "one of her techs" call me within the hour, and if they could not fix the problem, she would she to it that a refund was processed. No call came, so I contact the corporate office again. This time I spoke with another manger who was rude and basically combative. She claimed that I would get an email about the refund - which never came. I have today spoken to another manager at corporate who tried to cancel my subscription but "could not do it on her end." So now I am paying for a device that doesn't work for either incoming or outgoing calls. The deice is fine when it works, but when you have an issue, it is absolutely useless. Worse yet, Magic Jack doesn't really care whether it'd customers get good service or not, and based upon the personnel with whom I have had contact, they have no concept of customer service

service is horrible. They won't talk to you like a person. They do Chat only and people on Chat line don't know how to comprehend what they are reading. This time, they changed Chat person mid-stream and had to start all over. Chat got interrupted and lost all. so, had to start all over for a third time. I understand computer connections and it is a link problem with their system but they won't go there until they have you crawl around your office unplugging etc. That should not be necessary. Once I paid twice, it worked. Surprised

Not great - Magicjack

Posted:
Sound Quality Reliability Features Customer Service Price Overall User Rating
The Good:

The Bad:

I've used Magic Jack for about 3 years, upgrading my equipment as their technology improved. Their software is extremely crude, however. Some days I cannot use the system at all because it drops out so much there is no way to converse with someone. Some days, the device is not recognized by my computer at all and I have to unplug and then plug the box back into my USB port. Faxing is generally not possible. There is no way to set the time stamping of voicemails to your local time zone, so there is no way to tell what time of day a message is actually received. I had to change my phone number because of a stalker, which I informed them of. They sold that old number to my stalker, who then got all the calls to my old number. I think all they care about is having a cheap system that barely works most of the time

The Bad:

it's a very basic service, cheap but bad call quality. it's work for the occasional call but I had to move away from it for work purposes. it has issues with many call conference numbers like 1-855 numbers. Magicjack customer care tell me outright that their infrastructure is "perfect" and their tried every trick in the book to blame the internet service provider (75mbps), the phone (I changed it and no difference) and other stuff. The fact of the matter is they don't invest in quality infrastructure and quite so because it's a cheap service

I can understand people's negative reviews with Magic Jack. I bought a "Magic Jack Plus" about 4 years ago and also had a problem with dropped calls. The "plus" unit doesn't require to be plugged into a USB port of a PC - just plugged into an electrical outlet. People are correct, calls do get dropped this way. Now if plugged into a PC, there is no problem. However who wants to keep their PC running 24/7/365 just to get calls. My solution was purchasing a HP thin client (used) on EBAY for $29, free shipping. It has no moving parts so energy consumption is minimal. I have it configured so the Magic Jack starts up automatically if the power fails. After configuration, monitor, mouse, and keyboard are removed. I've had 4 years of trouble free service. I just renewed for 5 years for $100 and they didn't ask for that annoying $10/year porting fee. You can't go wrong. I'm paying $20/YEAR where the cable company was charging $30/MONTH for the same thing......what a deal. The thin client paid for itself in one month....

Has been great for my family! Extremely affordable and has been dependable for several years. I had to cut my budget extremely several years back, and this was step number one. I don't notice a quality or dependability difference (exceptions noted) from standard phone line. The only real issue is that a couple of people who call me from their cell phones get through and can hear me, but I can't hear them. I usually can guess or see who it is and call them back, with no problems hearing. Caller ID doesn't always come through, but usually does. Customer service has been actually quite good, but sometimes one must be persistent to resolve a tricky issue. I think they have improved in this area

The Good:

The Bad:

I upgraded my magic jack from one you plug into comp. to one you just plug into router. The yearly charges did not go from one to the other even though it was the same phone number. Half the time my service was not working and ended up where I just disconnected it as it was unreliable. Then I got an email from hell from them saying my subscription is set to auto renew in the next 60 days. First of all, I never auto renew anything. I prefer to pay for services when I know I have the money. But, I forgot my password when I went to log onto the website to change it to manual renew and I tried to generate a password reset which requires them to send me a link to reset it. I waited and waited and never got an email from then to be able to reset it and log in to my account so I sent them an email and told them to send me my password. They said they could not do that and we went back and forth 3 or 4 emails and they would not reset my password. Finally I cancelled my credit card and asked my bank to issue me a new one over this stupid magic jack situation which they could have avoided if they had just sent me my password to begin with. That was the last straw, they lost a customer for good

I really don't understand all the negative reviews. Many complain about porting their numbers. If you follow their directions it goes flawlessly. It did for me. Most connection problems are due to the quality of your internet service not the MJ. I am extremely satisfied with my MJ. I have had mine from the very first edition to the 2014 model. All have worked great for me. Being that the MJ is inexpensive as is the phone service you can't complain much about it. No big phone company can match the cost of using MJ phone service. MJ I feel is the easiest to set up and use. I have no problem recommending MJ to anyone with a good internet service....about 3mbs or higher

Don't waste your time or your money. I called to inquire about porting my phone number to a different carrier and was told there was no cost, but that it should be done before my service deactivated. I did so. Not only did they NOT port my number, but I had to pay $5 to reactivate my account for another month, and pay a $30 porting fee. Such a scam. They do not honor what they tell you. This is such a scam. My service was poor when I had it. Could not get calls in, they went right to voice mail. It may not cost a lot, but honestly, you get what you pay for. I will NEVER recommend anyone use them

After 43 days of struggling to get magic jack to work- I finally gave up and went back to my old provider. Imaging my surprise when I was charged $32.34 to port my number back to my old service provider. I checked the magic jack help section of their web page and looked up this question and answer: Question: Is there a cancellation or early termination fee? NO. If you choose to stop using magicJack, there are no cancellation, early termination, penalty or other fees. I believe I should not have been charge a fee to port my number back since the site says "or other fees". If you can't get magic jack to work within the first 30 days - cancel it and get at least your original money back. After 30 days - you get NOTHING

I have had this magic jack voip service for two years...I paid for five. I will go for another voip when my fifth year is up. One that I will pay monthly but I will be able to speak to real people if there are any problems... I bought some international minutes the other day. I had over 800 minutes. I tried calling someone out of the country. The phone just rang. No answering machine. No voice messaging. No one was home. I tried another person in the same country but my 800 minutes were gone and I only had 100 minutes left. There is no way you can actually TALK to a real customer service magic jack person. You can only chat to someone in India or another country. I can tell by the way they spell etc. They said they would get back to me by email. They never did. I keep CHATTING to ask them what happened to 700 of my international minutes with no results. Don't buy international minutes... Another thing is there is no one and no where to get instructions. I wanted to save a message. It says press 1 for this 2 for that 3 for something else etc until I got to the option to place the message in a folder and save it. There is no way to get my message because there is no option to go back into the folder. You can put things in but you cannot retrieve them. OR IF you can, no one will help me to do it. I CHATTED and told the person my problem. How can I get to my message back to listen? They would just repeat what the phone says...press option 1 for this, option 2 for that etc. I said I got that part but now how do I access my message? The person sent the supervisor who said, press option 1 for this, option 2 for that etc. I said yes, I got that but how do I get into the folder to retrieve my message? I do not know how to do that...He closed the chat box on me. The noise it makes when you talk can either be very bad static, whistles, or sounding as if the person were under water... I would rather pay 10 bucks a month for a voip service that has REAL customer service...and will probably do it before my five years is up, actually..

Ive been a MJ user since thier legacy MJ was introduced. The MJ plus is so much better because you dont need to leave it connected to a computer to use. I have this connected to the internal telephone wiring in 2 houses, and it feeds all of my telephones. The people that have complaints and problems more than likely have poor internet service. It doesnt need a whole lot of speed, but of course more is better. Mine work great with the 3 meg service that I have. On two occasions I have had MJ units fail due to closeby lightning strikes. Each time MJ customer service replaced them and the only charge was a small amount for shipping. I work for a telephone provider and even with an employee discount it doesnt come close the the MJ monthly fees. I have to laugh when I see other voip providers pricing. $ 10-$20-$30 per month! I was originally paying $20 a year, but it is now $35, that still blows the doors off every other company. The new smartphone app is great. I can take and make calls on the go or in home. Its like having a 1000 mile long cord on your phone. Would I recomend it? YES YES YES I have installed this for most of my friends and family and several neighbors

When I first got MagicJack there were several rural phone numbers that could not be called through MagicJack (but these numbers could call my number without problem). Now I can call these numbers without problem. I have an elderly relative whom I call daily. The free long distance has made the MagicJack a real bargain for me. I have tried to use the MagicJack customer support and found it to be frustrating to use. But I have eventually gotten the information that I need. At the price that MagicJack charges you cannot complain. In short the service works and the price really right. I am a happy customer

Prior to the 30 days (12/17/2014) they send me an email stating they will bill my credit card $37.73 Renewal on 12/20/2014. I had been charged for a renewal that I didn't authorize. They claim it will take 1 to 2 business days before they can refund my money. This is fraud. I have filed a complaint with the Texas Attorney General as well as Consumer Affairs. I like that I can get my calls at home to my cell phone as I travel for work. I love that it is so inexpensive also. I had Vonage before for 5 years and when I changed to Magic Jack I didn't notice a difference in sound quality. I've had Magic Jack for 3 years and am getting ready to purchase another year.I don't like the fact that there isn't any customer service to speak of. Also, people who call when I'm on another line cannot leave a message. It just keeps ringing and ringing until they hang up if I don't answer the call. But I loved that I could just take the Magic Jack plug in when I moved. Didn't have to worry about changing my phone number or calling someone to get it hooked up, etc

The CUSTOMER SERVICE DOES NOT EXIST!!! I had two accounts. One for my iPhone and one for my LAN Line with 5-year subscription. While making modifications to my iPhone account one of their "Technical Support Representatives" by accident disabled my both accounts. She did not have a clue on how to reinstate it??? I have lost my business line. It has happened on August of 2014. After numerous messaging (No Phone Support. Only Web) and many different levels of "Support" they never got it working. Still No Dial Tone as of this review writing! It is Already December of 2014. I went with different VoIP. DO NOT BUY MagicJack. No support. They will cheat you out of your money. Cut contract short! Disable your account and you be left helpless!. Thanks

I joined and cancelled within the trail period. Unfortunately, I decided to port my phone in and out. That was a huge mistake. I understand there are fees for porting in, but when I wanted to port out, I was dinged another $30 for that. So basically if you decide to port in and out you end up paying as much as you did for the MagicJack for a year!! I can't even change my mind now since I mailed the device. I called Customer Service and finally got someone who repeated like a parrot that there were fees for porting in or out and that it was in the Terms of Service, which is a long document, which I decided not to read every word of (I know, I know...the devil is in the details). I did check their FAQ and searched all over their site about porting. They mention fees for porting in, which I decided was ok but charging again for porting out seems over the top. All in all, if you can deal with the low volume for voice then it is may be worth the price, but expect no customer service and DO NOT PORT your number

Beware of third party MJ tech services. I called one, and he accessed my pc, only to place a mysterious password on it when I recognized I was being scammed. He wanted $500 or more to fix! I had to take my pc to a professional, as no one could reboot or sign back into my computer anymore. Lost most of my saved data.... Huge expense and inconvenience. If I had the time and energy, I would research and sue this particular company, and know I would win in court. REMEMBER THAT MJ DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY TELEPHONE SUPPORT, SO IF YOU ARE CALLING AN 800 # TO REACH THEM, YOU ARE ASKING FOR TROUBLE WITH A THIRD PARTY IMPOSTER

I purchased a magic jack 3 years ago for my office fax line. Previously I was paying the local phone company $70 per month for the extra line. I have it set up so the fax line goes into a computer so that I do not have to waste paper and ink printing out unwanted ads. There is no difference in the quality of faxes received from the previous overcharged phone company. One day the service did go out and it was due to my nonrenewal of the product. They did however continue to support it for 2 months after I was supposed to renew it before cutting it off. I renewed and as soon as the payment was taken the line was back up. Another time the device went out and I contacted the chat line. They quickly responded went through some diagnostics and determined the device was bad. They sent me a new one priority and I had it in 2 days, I just had to pay $5. I like this product so much I switched out my home phone service from the high priced cable company. I have not had any problems with this at all and it gives caller ID and will take messages and send you an email with a recording of the message if your answering machine does not pick up. I am also looking forward to bringing the device with me when I travel. I have a second home and now can bring my home phone number with me. I have not experienced one negative in more than 3 years of use. Great product and highly recommend

I had Magicjack for a year and all I can say good about it is the price. After that year it had problems. I could call out, but I couldn't hear everyone that called me. So after doing "live chat" over and over, being told the same things by different operators....I finally insisted on them sending me a new unit, because I felt mine was not working. (even though they thought it was just fine) The new one worked....so I was correct. These people are idiots who do the live chat! Then after one month, it was doing the same thing. Sometimes just unplugging it and plugging it back makes it work, but really??? What a piece of crap! I finally decide to end my sevice, and they charge me $32 to end it. Not so cheap now! Also, want to mention....Caller ID is not great. Even bought a new phone, but the only names that show up are the ones I put in my own phone. No other names show up...just phone numbers. And so many ro-bo calls are locall looking numbers

MagicJack - A Review

Posted:
Sound Quality Reliability Features Customer Service Price Overall User Rating
The Good:

The Bad:

Magicjack is as reliable as your internet connection. You'll need at least 512K upload speed for this to work well, but more speed allows it to work well even when other devices are sharing bandwith. If your audio starts to break up, it's a sign the internet speed is too slow due to another device hogging too much bandwidth. 256K is the minimum, but than you can't use any other internet device while making a call. The newer devices work with or without a computer. Without a computer, you need the included AC power pack. But you don't need the AC power pack if you use a computer. The USB port has enough power to operate the device. An added bonus is if you use this with a laptop that has wi-fi, you can bring the magic jack and a phone to any place that has wi-fi and make free calls without plugging cables into power or internet. There are still places in the country where there is no cell service, and this fills in those gaps as long as you're not moving around. An added bonus not advertised is the ability to use the same phone number in two locations, provided you have two magic jack devices. That means home and office can share one number, or switch to separate numbers when needed. In addition, you can download an app to a smart phone or tablet and that will also share the number when it's within wi-fi range. Very few services offer free calls to Canada and the US, so if you have people in both countries the calls can all be free with your cheap annual service fee. Setting up a new device to run on a new magicjack number is simple and fast. But if you need to port in a number, it can be a hassle. As good as the technology is, the support service sucks. And there are no phone numbers to call. You're stuck using a chat service that can take half a day. And that's if you get someone who understands your problem and can figure out a solution. Bottom line is this. Magicjack makes an excellent inexpensive landline service for people who otherwise would only have a cell phone. Cell phone service can be weak, batteries can die and phones can be lost or stolen. Thirty bucks a year is darn cheap for a backup or second phone line

Before purchasing my MJ I did a lot of research to see if something so inexpensive was worth it. I read multiple reviews about how horrible it was and the customer service was non existent. In actuality everything I have experienced is quite the contrary. The unit was easy to set up. The unit makes clear calls and to date one year in service I am so pleased that I purchased a second unit for my office. Most callers do not even notice that I am calling from a VOIP service. I have used their customer service live chat three times and each time my question was answered completely and in my opinion quite competently. I have wired the MJ into my home phone wiring and can pick up any extension and use my MJ flawlessly. I even have my burglar alarm dialing out on the MJ without problem. I can only assume that the persons who left undesirable comments do not have a working knowledge of computers, the internet or are not tech saavy. In short if you have a very slow internet connection, it would be a given that the system will probably work poorly. Other than that I am quite happy and would recommend it and would purchase additional units if I required additional lines

Then i someone with something important I can call them back. I also use this number for credit card companies since they are always calling to sell some service. This way I never have to listen to them ring my phone. When it comes time to activate the new card from your home phone I plug it in and call in bingo it is activated. I will give them this: The quality has greatly improved over when I first started with them way back when 5 or 6 years ago. ALSO, if you call 800 numbers they capture your number you are calling from so I use the magic jack for that since I have no desire for these sales people to have my cell number

I have used magic jack for several years. From day one I've had terrible service (dropped calls, when calling my MJ number, can't hear the caller, trouble dialing out, terrible voice quality). I have replaced my magic Jack device, later upgraded to two newer devices and still no improvement. My internet connection of 25/5 is great too, which they insisted was slow. MJ device connected directly to the router. I was very patient with the (chat) tech support which is most likely located outside of US and seemed to copy/paste pre typed responses that did not make any sense. When I signed up for Magic Jack service I was provided Terms of Service (TOS) that I had to agree to in order to proceed with the service. Nowhere in the TOS it stated that I must also review and agree to what is listed in Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). Right now after many failed attempts of improving my terrible Magic Jack phone service. I have no other option but switch to a different career. When I requested a phone number port out, I was told that I must pay a port out fee of $30 as listed in FAQs. Any attempt to discuss a waive of this fee was unsuccessful and the support agent simply referred to the FAQs and ended the chat. I would strongly discourage anyone from using Magic Jack, do your research there are many alternatives with much better phone service quality and better customer support

As soon as I decided to try this device I got a really bad taste in my mouth for the company because of the way the push-push-push the sales on you for extended service, rate plans, insurance, faster delivery.. non-stop. I said no to all of them and still got it within 3 days. I tried to get it to work putting hours into it over several days and nothing. I finally disconnected it as I was going out of town. Then I tried it again, and again. They say you can have it hooked up and using it within a few minutes. Finally I tried it again... same problems... did the on-line chat thing for over 2 hours. Finally the person said "Do you have satellite?" Well, yes I do. Oh, our device does not work with satellite. OH REALLY! Why doesn't it clearly state that on your web site? Oh it does, but she could never point me to where it says anything like that. Long story short, I've lost about 8 hours fooling around with this, which is even more valuable than my $70 - $49.99 plus handling and shipping - that I am now past the 30 days and they won't refund. This is just a BAD and GREEDY company - I'd stay away if I were you

I have had my home phone number for a long time, and i have been paying my local phone company(s) thousands of dollar (you heard me THOUSANDS, i'm not even joking), i have'd paid 55 dollars a month on my phone bill for the better part of a 2 decades till recently i changed provider to pay 46 dollars a month (not much of a difference), then MagicJack comes along with their eye catching advertisement 20 dollars PER YEAR!!, i like many fell for their TRAP. i ported my number since i had since the beginning of time to the new majicjack plus 2013, work well for a year then the new majicjack 2014 came, work well for 2 MONTHS, then broke down, i chatted with CS for a full 2 HOURS, FRUITLESS, then i wanted to port my number to a new carrier, ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE, i didn't spend 1 hour not 2 either but 3 DAYS to get my number back. Don't be fooled - the price isn't as low as they say nor is the service as good. We got MJ and it installed with ease. As we began to have connection problems, I thought it best to power cycle the MJ+ device (which connects from the router to the phone's wall jack). When I touched it, it was *hot*! Going online, I found some other people experienced that as well and found their service also suffered. "Eureka!", I thought, "that's why people are calling us and finding nobody home even though we're here and nobody's on the phone." I followed the recommendation of using a long USB cable to separate the MJ device from the transformer. Things improved somewhat but the problems remained. I got MJ support on chat - that's the only way to reach them as MJ doesn't give out any email addresses - and they suggested power cycling the MJ device and the router. After going through that same song and dance for multiple sessions, I finally demanded they connect me to Level 2 support or else I'd drop my account. Level 2 joined chat and walked me through changes to several router settings. Over the next several months things got no better. I contacted support and again asked for their help. I gave them specific times and dates when callers attempted to reach us and couldn't, even though we were home and the phone was not in use. I asked them to please check and see what return code or message their server received to not complete the call. (For example, were you not able to even connect to our router? Were you able to connect to the router, but not the MJ device? Were you able to connect to both the router and MJ device but not the phone line itself?) Their answer was simple: just power cycle your router and MJ device. They would not hear of anything further or discuss anything which might actually get to the root of **why** this was happening. I'm going elsewhere

MagicJack ordered from the internet. I know it could be purchased elsewhere but it saved me the time to go out and get it. MagicJack works as advertised. Clear sound, no distortion. No dropped calls. I was on a conference call for over an hour last week. Clear sound with no issues. I can only speak of course about my particular experience but MagicJack replaced my bundled cable telephone service and works extremely well and is reliable. The transfer of your home number is very easy, takes about 10 business days before you can receive calls. Once I had magicjack plus up and running I cancelled by phone service with the cable provider. Also I was able to realize additional savings because I was no longer tied to the cable providers voice modem. I bought my own that will pay for itself in under a year. There should be no fear in moving to the magicjack plus service. It might seem like it is too good to be 1. However MagicJack works exactly as advertised. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to replace their expensive bundled cable telephone service. You are already use to using in internet provided phone. This one is no different other then it costs a lot less. Note I often have my home computer turned off. MagicJack Plus works without the need for the computer to be on

I read all these CONS people are talking about but I dont see the details; need more info folks! CUSTOMER SERVICE: Yes you use a chat room. But in the dozen times I used it, I had a person on line in less than 5 seconds. Try to do that with telephone vocal help with other companies. And I dont have to repeat myself as with telephone help. I have my question all written out before I get in the chat room then I paste it in. And they have helped me with critical problems. Like one time my latency was 2 seconds (talk delay). They got it down to 0.15 seconds for me. Now my Magicjack is almost as fast as a land line; definitely faster than a cell phone. DROPPED CALLS: Now this might happen after 90 minutes but if you get dropped calls after 1 minute, check your internet provider or fix your router. I use cable internet instead of DSL. Cable works very good. NOISY: Check the telephone and LAN wires coming out of the MagicJack. Make sure theyre not all twisted or bundled together. Keep them separate. That makes a big difference. Whatever outlet you use, dont cover it with furniture. MagicJack needs airflow. Its a small device that needs to breathe. Once/month un-power then re-power the MagicJack. That keeps connections fresh. Plug the jack into the 1st LAN connection on the router. Then 256 computers can hook to the router and not interrupt MagicJack. When done correctly, people think youre on a land line. BAD WALL ADAPTER: Dont cover the MagicJack with furniture. It needs to breathe (let off the heat). BTW, most everyone plugs theirs in on a vertical wall. I use an extension cord to get the MagicJack horizontal. It rests better that way. And it takes a lot of stress out of the connections; which sooner or later will break. PORTING NUMBERS: Yes you have to pay $10/year to port your special number. MagicJack has to rent that number every year! They now want you to buy prepaid minutes to make local calls Huh? I live in Idaho and have called almost every state and never ran into requiring prepaid minutes. But some SD phone lines do require everyone to pay rent to use. I shun those phone companies. MagicJack has been measured the fastest latency of VOIP service. I.e., Land lines are the fastest. MagicJack is 2nd. Other VOIPs and cell phones are a distant 3rd, etc., I appreciate that if Im on the phone and another person calls, MagicJack will take a message (after preset # rings you set up). Then MagicJack emails you the message as a .wav file. Works every time. Get the free app. Its amazing. If Im in the grocery store and my MagicJack rings at home, my cell phone will start ringing. So I can answer MagicJack out of the house. Plus MagicJack looks at my cell phone contacts and displays who is calling. My house phone doesn't display the name because I dont have names programmed into my home cordless phone. Get this: If Im talking on the house phone and another person calls, my cell phone rings. My wife will answer the cell phone and start talking. So we have 2 different conversations going on AT THE SAME TIME on the same phone number! Amazing. One time our house power went out. We still got our phone calls because the cell phone app was still working. And the app has very clear sound. The app has about a 0.3s latency but that is still faster than a regular cell phone! Are we using cell phone minutes? When I checked my cell phone bill the MagicJack minutes didn't show up in cell minutes or data usage minutes. So Im wondering how they do that. And the app logs all your MagicJack calls. Thats been handy sometimes to see when people called. I also have Google Voice. The latency is not near as good. But if you need to call SD for free (see above complaints), then use Google Voice. However, soon Google Voice wont be free. For international calls use PennyTalk mobile. Its cheaper and you dont have to pay a connection fee (you do if you use a land line). But you cant let it sit since theres a 99 monthly fee. So like MagicJack you will lose money if you just let it sit. Overall, I've been very amazed with MagicJack

I like voip and have used it and recommended it for more than 5 years, all on Magic Jack. However, when porting my MJ numbers I ran into trouble. The first one went smoothly, but took a month to complete. The second one has taken more than 2 months, and could not be completed because I had not yet paid the $32 ransom that went unknown for most of that time. I had the account number and ID correct, but they were still implementing the ransom, so my request was turned down about 10 times. MJ has been a good service, but its business model of angering its bases users seems stupid and short-sighted. Thus I do NOT recommend MJ to future users. There are alternatives that will treat you better

I use Republic Wireless as my cell phone provider which is a wifi phone service. I wanted a regular home phone to chat on as I hate talking on my cell phone and my cell phone reception at home isn't so good. Using Magicjack was suggested and I find it to be perfectly fine. Much better than my other wifi phone set up. No one thinks I'm on some wierd phone. My only issue thus far is not having the names show up on caller Id. I think you do get what you pay for but even if this works for a few months I'll be farther ahead

Was looking forward to this low cost alternative to the Vonage system I've used for about 7 or 8 years. The cost of Vonage pushed me away. MagicJack sounded too good to be 1. Received the MagicJack packet about 5 days after ordering. The only instructions are printed on the inside flap of the package. Shows two alternate installation processes - one for router only (no computer) and a second for computer use. After many attempts of following the details step-by-step, it wouldn't work. Finally decided to attempt to connect to the computer to see if that would work. After attempting to go through the 'Register Your MagicJack' process 4 times, I went to the live chat site for help. First thing they did is email me a MagicJack update. It took them 3 attempts and over an hour to get the registration process completed. At that point, the MagicJack worked on the computer. The tech told me it was now ready to plug directly into the router so it would work as advertised without the computer. I tried the system on 3 different routers - it never would work - I got a continuous dial tone, the system wouldn't dial out. I re-connected to the computer and went back to the chat room. Over a 3 day period, and a total of 7+ hours of attempts; AND after talking to at least 12 of the 'Top 10 technical support specialists' I was transferred to - they never could get it to work. They even attempted to talk me through router setting changes. I got disconnected twice - due to their instructions to unplug the router - which disconnected the computer connection and cut them off. When connecting back, I had to start over each time - with a rookie tech agent, starting over with the explanation (they had no record/tracking of my prior calls), eventually getting escalated again to one o their 'Top 10 technical support specialists'. They were never able to resolve the problem. But, I decided to keep the system and use it through my computer. After 2 weeks, it would no longer work on my computer. Today I contacted the chat room again. First thing they did is send another MagicJack update. This fixed the problem on my computer. I explained my dis-satisfaction with the entire MagicJack experience, telling the agent about the failure to work on a router as promised. Today's agent asked me if I had an iPhone (I do), and suggested that I use the power plug/adapter that I use to charge my phone; hook the MagicJack to that adapter, then try connecting to the router. I followed the steps, using my iPhone adapter, and the system worked. The tech agent said the problem was the MagicJack provided adapter. I asked if they could ship me a new/working adapter. Here's where I really got 'hacked' with MagicJack. They will NOT send a new adapter until I return the defective one, at my expense. Then, they will ship me a new one. The tech agent strongly suggested that it would be best if I just purchase one myself from a local store. The system is horribly pathetic, the company's policy for providing a replacement for defective parts is unbelievable, and although the customer service techs made every attempt to assist - the chat process is long and cumbersome - especially when getting cut off and having to start over. And, it took over 4 weeks for them to suggest that the problem was with the power adapter. DON'T WAST YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON MAGICJACK!

Would not recommend MagicJack to someone I don't like

I had to buy four magic jacks in the last year or so just because I would not get support for defective AC Adaptors. C.S. manager did not have any customer service skills and did not care or appreciate the urgency to restore phone/fax line. Three AC Adaptors went bad, two of them within first two months and again no help or support from C.S. or tech support. That is why I am taking the time to point this out as it is clear to me that there is an issue with MagicJack wall AC Adaptors but MagicJack would not acknowledge it and will force you or suggest that you will need to buy a new one. They do not even offer AC Adaptors only. Add lack of professionalism from C.S

quite the scam! first off, we purchased magicjack with the assumption that it was $30 for life, after paying over $100 for our hardware, port in fee and the first year we were very unhappy with the quality and the fact that we could not even call forward our line as it stated it could (apparently they disabled this feature). After requesting to port back our number we had to pay another $50 for an additional year fee as well as a $30 port out fee!!! as a business customer and having dealt with many other providers, MagicJack tops them off for the worst in every category. VERY DISAPPOINTED TO SAY THE LEAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MagicJack - Blocking Numbers

Posted:
Sound Quality Reliability Features Customer Service Price Overall User Rating
The Good:

The Bad:

MagicJack...approach with caution. I bought a magicjack back in 2010 just to use as a second line, as I work from home a couple days a week, and don't want to tie up the home phone line. I did not, and will not, give up my POTS service, the magicjack was purely supplemental. For a while it worked OK - I could live with the sometimes mediocre sound quality, with some 1800 and 1866 numbers being blocked (incl CRA at one point - not good in tax season), and the occassional (probably weekly) going offline as it's just a second line for me. you get what you pay for. The deal breaker was in 2012 when they started blocking local conference line numbers that I dial into for work (Verizon and Bell conference services) - instead of connecting me, it would instead play an ad telling me I should use the magicjack conference service to "host my conference call" uhmmmm, yeah. that's all well and all, but I'm trying to connect to OTHER peoples conference calls. The workaround, until recently, was to use the toll free numbers that most (but not all) conferences have. but recently, even the toll free numbers for conference lines haven't been connecting. I just get silence then the dial tone. That's it for me. I bought 5 years service, I've used 3. I'm ditching the remaining two and cutting my losses. also the prices - my Canadian number has to be renewed yearly, $10, plus the service itself is $30, so $40 a year (3.33/month). Still cheap, but not such a deal if it doesn't work, which for my needs, it does not. I've since bought a real ATA (Cisco SPA112 device for $38) and signed up for voip.ms; for my needs, it's, a whole lot more reliable, better sound quality, and best of all, no blocked numbers...least none I've found yet; and prices (for my needs) are on par with magicjack. voip.ms isn't quite plug and play, but its not complicated either

My Magic Jack Plus finally died after about a year and a half (I think) so I decided to switch to Basic Talk since I wasn't happy with Magic Jack anyway. I kept my old phone number when I got the Magic Jack Plus, so I wanted it ported over to the Basic Talk when I switched services. I don't know how much work it is to port out a number but I thought being charged $32.34 for it was quite a bit too much. That's just another reason why I wouldn't recommend a Magic Jack to anyone

I spent 10 hours chatting with customer support, my magicjack only worked with the computer on, but I wanted my Magicjack to be connected to the wall, but the phone never worked connected to the wall. I'm returning it back to RadioShack today. Now I know why the magicjack is cheap, there customer support team sucks!!! Every time they said they were going to transfer me to someone higher up or to have someone get remote access to my computer, the person on the chat would disconnect me and never come back. I tried about five times the same procedure and nothing. I asked to be passed to a manager and it was my last attempt to see if they would do so, so I could keep the system, but they never did. I spent 10 hours and accomplished nothing! Don't waist your time or money!!!!!!

I bought 5 years worth of MajicJack and after 1 year I was shut off. They say I will be turned back on as soon as someone in Bangladesh? gets in contact with their accounting office and sends me a verification number. 24 hrs, no number!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Except for the total lack of customer support it is probably worth what you pay for it. You will be "chatting" with someone who is paid a few rupies to understand the company rules and not understand human consumers and what they are paying for (like phone service). Ayesha would not give any estimate when I might have my 5 year prepaid phone service reinstated. You may ask for and be transferred to a "supervisor" as many times as you would like. Of course it is the person in the next chair who you can then spend a while telling them who you are and what is your problem

Cheap is cheap! Think twice before purchasing this device. Most of the reviews you will read are fake, created by their marketing team. Just imagine would you run to your computer to write a good review if you are completely satisfied? You are writing a review only if you are angry and want to take your revenge. If everything works fine you just forget about that. You will have 30 days trial period. Within that time everything will work fine. I started having problems on the very next day after the trial period ended. Ive been with the Magicjack for about 40 days and already sick and tired of their Customer NO service and technical problems. If you purchase the device be ready to frequent disconnections. You will not hear your opponents in most cases they are calling you. They will have to either redial few times or you will redial them. The Magicjack company has no phone number on their site. The only way to contact them is a live chat. I had to chat almost every day in order to reset the device on their end and it did not fix the problem. They also promised me that I could continue to use my Google Voice IP number when I decided to switch to Magicjack. And within 30-days trial I could use it. On the day 31-st I lost this service. Per their operator: As per terms of service , you can't connect to a non ILEC number if you do not have an IPP on your phone .. This part of Terms of service was already fully implemented. How could I two weeks ago? They advertise millions of customers are join their company, but they dont tell you how many customers leave after they experienced problems with them. Cheap is cheap

The advertised cheap price is if you pay for FIVE YEARS in advance. If you want to keep your own number, you pay to bring it over -- and you pay every year to keep it. This more than doubles the advertised cost. Then every week you pick up the phone and there's no dial tone. How long has has the phone been dead? How many calls have you missed? Their answer: re-boot your router! Fix the problem? Only until the next time -- which will be in the next few days

Don't waste your time or money. Very disappointed with MAGICJACK. Sound quality is terrible. Lots of popping and can't heard what people are saying. Half the calls drop out. When people call sometimes MJ will record their voice message and e-mail it to me instead of letting my machine record the message. I called another phone service to change phone companies and keep my phone number and it will take two weeks. Then MJ sends me an e-mail and says they have to charge me $32 to port my number to the new service. WHAT A RIP OFF! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!!!!!!!!

After 2 years with Magic Jack I had no problems, so went all out and bought another 6 years. Magic Jack has changed their terms of service. They now want you to buy prepaid minutes to make local calls unless you are calling someone who also has Magic Jack or a cell phone. This is in addition to the annual fee. They seem to be able to change the terms of service in the middle of the contract. They also will not refund any portion of your subscription if you have had the service over 30 days. I am now unplugging my Magic Jack and will tell everyone I know just how shady this company is

I and my wife have been with Magic Jack for going on 3 years and we are not in anyway sorry we are using them and we intend to renew next month for another year. We are planning on getting the new device so we can plug it directly into our router. The device we have is quire reliable. I would not recommend Magic Jack as a primary phone service. However, having limited minutes on our cell phone family account, the Magic Jack is great for the many hour or longer phone conversations we have with family and friends. For the money Magic Jack is one heck of a deal. I don't know how they do it for the money. There are competitors out there. So, if upi don't like Magic Jack, then go with someone else. I would recommend Magic Jack to my family and friends. In fact, I have recommended Magic Jack to family and friends for years

I had very bad experience with Magicjack and its service, the device was brand new, it worked for few minutes and stopped, I wasted almost two days chating with customer service technical support, they kept transferring me from one person to other, They keep you waiting because it seems they provide service for more than one customer at a time, customer service went through everything, I even gave them remote access to my computer, The issue was not resolved, at the end they said the device is defected and it has to be replaced, They asked me for about 25% of the cost for shipment to replace it(maybe this is the cost of the shipment and device for them), I asked for this to be waived, they said this is the policy (as if it is untouchable Holy Book) I refused to pay and told them I will share this bad experience, they said OK (as if THEY DON'T CARE) They misled me by saying they don't have a telephone number for technical support and they actually do, I think they are using their previous reputation and the patent protection and market monopoly, All what I am left with now is a piece of junk called Magicjack Device, and a bad experience about them, Please share this with whomever wants to buy this device again

I have had two for 5 years. The first one was plugged into a wireless PC and it had alot of trouble. I chatted in over and over and over about this and no one said anything was wrong with plugging this into a wireless device, so I didn't put any pieces together. After hours and hours and days and days of chatting over the problems with the first jack, finally I was transferred to a higher level of support who asked me no questions. He just took my information and sent me a new jack for the price of shipping. I was in SHOCK. Finally someone with some courtesy and smarts. So my second one came and I gotten myself an IP and a desktop pc, so the new one got plugged into this new setup. This one worked better, but not much. I just exchanged a grocery list of one set of problems for a smaller milk and bread list. But the real eye-opener was when I recently had it with my internet provider because my internet signal had not been good since I got my service. (I had put in alot of tickets over the years, but nothing ever changed.) But I guess I made my dissatisfaction known enough and I have now received a 3-wk long amount of attention from my IP and something very unique started happening. To do the work they were doing over 3 weeks, they had to cut my internet several times. But my phone still worked! I mean, even when the internet was down, I could still use my MJ! Now, I don't know how to tell you to get your IP to step it up with their service, but your speed has alot to do with it. Now my speed is consistently good, each time I run my own speed test

Hi, I bought magic jack thinking it is cheap. It is little cheaper than Skype. But using magic jack you CAN NOT call all the numbers, some of the examples are conference phone nos, calling card local nos etc..(These are the few i know, i am not sure what all nos you can not call). Second thing is in the website it says that you 100% money will be refunded, but you need to pay the return charges whey you are returning the product, so be very careful

DON'T BUY Magic Jack! Dropped calls, tons of hidden charges, and 0 customer service person.

A friend of mine used something similar to Magic Jack and was please with it, so I thought I'd give it a try. Boy am I sorry. I'm not out $140 and countless hours of trying to get things figured out. I tried 3 separate times to join a conference call (different numbers, different days, different events) and each time it never worked. I looked for 15 minutes to find a phone number to call customer service. Guess what, a phone number doesn't exist!! I received live help from someone and was floored at how rude they were! When I explained my issued 3 different times, a different way each time, I got the same text copied and pasted over and over in response to my question. I asked to speak to a supervisor, then the next line read "miss if you're not going to respond and cooperate I have no choice but to end this conversation" and ended the help! What??!!! I got on a live help with someone else and told them what happened, can I please talk to a manager and was told don't worry, our supervisors read all of the conversations. HA. RIGHT. Plus, weekly our calls were just dropped. Weekly we had to reset the magic jack b/c it stopped working. Have to pay to be a part of a conference call Over all I am EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED! There were a lot of cons, read some of them- dropped calls, had to reset jack once per week b/c of not functioning, can't have fax and phone plugged in at same time, incredibly rude customer service via 'live chat' only, no phone number to talk to someone, website does not clearly explain anything, pay extra to be a part of a conference calls, pay extra to call international (I assumed that), pay $30 to transfer back to my old provider

PLEASE NOTE: NEVER HAD TO USE CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND YOU CAN'T LEAVE THAT FIELD BLANK, SO PLEASE DISREGARD THAT. I have been with magic jack for a little over a year. When I calculated how much money I would of spent this year, I saved an estimated $735 on all my calls to the US and Canada. I have had some issues with using it with a wireless adapter, but I got the landlord to install an extra line in my room, and added my own hub so I could use it. I see the big complaint a lot of people have is sound quality. Well, I guess either the quality of your isp has something to do with it, or they are total retards, because once i hard wired it to my router, it works pretty good. There is 911 service, but you have to agree to it, 911 connects you to magic jack, then they connect you to the police. Of course, since only snitches call 911, I don't need this service. Just in case people are curious, I live in Toronto, they gave me a 647 number, so far I have had no issues calling the 716 area, (Buffalo) all of Toronto, and a few 800 numbers for tech support. Hope this has been Help ful

Magic Jack kept transferring me from one person to another up the line. And then I would have to start all over. I went through this a half dozen times and no one could get it working. I had no trouble with Vonage or Comcast. I spent many hours - 20 or more with the help desk and supervisors and they were never able to get it working. The sound quality was terrible. Everyone complained and eventually, I had to switch completely to my cell phone which quickly gobbled up any savings from a nearly "free" service. Then to add insult to injury, I had to pay $32 to port it over to another company!!! What a deal

Shortly after I hooked it up I lost all sound on my computer entirely. I disconnected it but it seems as though it's like a tapeworm, it doesn't want to leave once it's got in. I have just spent over an hour and a half on the phone with them, first trying to fix the problem (they eventually wanted to take over my computer "and fix it from our end" to which I said no, for obvious reasons. You have to have a RMA number to return the thing and when I went to get it I was instantly refused although yesterday was the first day it had been hooked up and I have an email from Magic Jack saying I have until the end of the month. So back to customer support where I was asked for order number, which I gave them, the last 4 digits of my credit card, which they found agreed, but somehow they still could not find the order. After 15 minutes of dithering, they wanted to know the tracking number. At this point I was getting so angry I simply said goodbye and will tackle them again tonight when I am calmer. I have never been stonewalled quite so blatantly. Because this is chat I have no documentation that the chat ever occurred to give to the bank. BEWARE OF MAGIC JACK unless you have money to throw away if it doesn't work. You won't be happy if you want to return it, even if after only one day. The customer service people are pleasant enough but that alone isn't useful

We bought MagicJack to replace our home phone and that was the biggest waste of $50 I have EVER spent. We initially plugged it into our computer but that slowed our Internet waaayyyyy down so we plugged it directly into the wall. The sound quality was terrible, just a notch above a whisper was the best we could hear. The worst part: they advertise "Keep your old phone number" WHAT A CROCK!!!!!! We couldn't even get the same area code, then why the heck are they selling it here???? The only way you can notify customer service is through "Live Chat" but the idiot on the other side couldn't even figure out what we were asking, no matter how lay the terms were. I ended up buying "Straight Talk" which is $15 per month but works great and we were able to get a local number. I am tossing the POS MagicJack and will NEVER recommend it to anyone, EVER!!!!

It WILL stop working, and their live chat help will not be able to fix it so that it will work the next day, or if you restart the computer. I have spent more than 5 hours on their help chat on a single problem that they never fixed. They will have you do the same things again and again - restart, reinstall, unplug and wait, etc - that you have already tried. They will escalate your problem up the line to a person who first says they are reading the transcript so far, but it becomes obvious they don't read it at all. Eventually someone will kluge a solution that won't work more than a few minutes, and you have to go back to support. This time, they wanted me to change system settings that were fine before, and install a vpn (to "get around" those settings) that bombarded me with ads. They dismissed the idea that it could be a flash upgrade causing the trouble, when that was the only thing that had changed recently. I think what's happening is that they can't ever admit the possibility that the device has gone bad. They will never concede that - it would cost them money. Use something else, anything else

I'm not one to complain much about electronics but this experience was truly horrible. I spent several hours trying to make this device work (I have a PhD in Computer Engineering), and then spent 3 hours going in circles with customer service trying to make it work. I eventually said I want a refund, and of course their Terms of Service required an RMA and for it to be shipped back. Now think about it, I got this to take overseas so I could get a US number. Now I have to ship it internationally to get my money back... right. At least I got to keep an ethernet cable, a usb extender cord, and a usb charger for my troubles

OK, this is my entire LIVECHAT with one of their operators... Please wait for a site operator to respond. You are now chatting with 'Liz' Your Issue ID for this chat is ... Liz: Hello, how may I help you? Wayne: Hi there, Liz. I just received the MagicJack Plus today from your company and not only did I not receive the 6 free months added to the end of my 5-yr membership but also it doesn't have my phone number attached to it. Liz: Hi Wayne Wayne: I tried calling my girlfriend's number from it and it left this number on her caller ID 434-282-0313 Liz: May I have your Magicjack phone number please? Wayne: 727- Liz: Thank you for waiting. I'll be with you in just a moment. Wayne: ok Liz: Thank you for waiting. Liz: may I know where is your device connected? Wayne: right now it's plugged into my USB Liz: as I have checked it here, there is no magicjack plus registered in your account,. Liz: it seems that it is not yet registered. Wayne: but normally we're going to plug this into the wall outlet... I had it plugged into the wall outlet since earlier today and it also gets extremely hot with a burnt smell. Liz: Do you see the Click Here to Register on the left option on the pad? Wayne: ok, now I see it Liz: All right, please click on that and register the device to your existing account Wayne: so am I registering a new device or replace a current magicjack Liz: and you may click on " Replace Magicjck" to transfer your phone number as well as your remaining license to your new magicjack plus device Liz: register it as to replace a current magicjack so that your license and number will be transferred to new device Liz: however your old device will expire, but you can still activate it Wayne: ok, another problem I had with the old MagicJack is that it never rang... very seldom it would ring even though it was always plugged in Liz: do you have the dial pad open on your screen? Wayne: people would complain that it would just go right into voicemail Wayne: yes Liz: do you also see your phone number on top of the pad ? Wayne: yes, now I do Liz: now please try calling your magicjack number from another phone and check if it works Wayne: ok, it rang on my laptop, but not sure if it would work with a phone plugged into it Liz: All right, you may try connecting it to your router and check if it also work Wayne: I also refreshed the page and it shows my device renew date is still 2/20/2015... don't I get an additional 6 months? Liz: since you chose to replace your magicjack during registration, you r phone number as well as your remaining license was transferred to the new one however your free 6 months of license has been forfeited since you chose to replace your device, you can only get the free 6 months of you chose to register it as a new device, however your remaining license from your old device cannot be transferred. Wayne: I did not choose to replace my device, I was offered a special deal to existing customers to upgrade and get an additional 6 months. Wayne: Order No.: TS... Reference ID: 4... Liz: thank you Liz: Please wait while I check that for you Wayne: This is the whole paragraph... I have persuaded the CEO and President of magicJack to offer the Public the lowest price ever for a magicJack, but also to offer an amazingly lower price to only you, our loyal customer. We want everybody in the world using magicJack and we believe the best way to make this happen is for YOU to tell others about the amazing voice quality only available with the new 2014 magicJack. For a limited time and only through this exclusive e-mail offer, the CEO has agreed to sell the 2014 new magicJack PLUS for just $29.95 to you, which even includes six months of FREE telephone service. This comes with a no question 30 day money back Free Trial. Liz: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you. Liz: thank you for the information. Liz: However, during registration you did chose the second option which is provided below: Liz: http://aid.magicjack.com/TransferService.PNG Wayne: that's only because you instructed me to click on replace the device so I can put my phone number onto it... I figured that since it was coming directly from MagicJack that it already had my number on it. Wayne: If I am not getting my free 6 months then I will send this back and demand a full refund. I did not need a replacement but chose to for the upgrade that including the 6 more months of airtime. Liz: I understand however both option I provided above will enable you to have the same number but only the second option will have the option to transfer your license to the new one Wayne: I understand what you are saying but since this was an email offer for LOYAL CUSTOMERS to upgrade their device for the 29.95 which even includes six months of FREE telephone service then that's what I fully EXPECTED. Wayne: why can't you just add the 6 more months on your computer and we can end this conversation? Liz: Unfortunately, that is not possible Wayne because that options it not provided or available here in our end. Wayne: then I guess now is a good time to get a manager or email me a return label for this device Liz: I understand your concern but do you wish to return your device? Wayne: yes, I didn't need to spend the total of 41.93 on this when the old one was still sufficient enough to make calls Liz: okay.. Liz: you may click on the link below abd fill in the return fomr Liz: return form** Liz: Click here Liz: just enter your order number and email address then click Search button and click Submit RMA Wayne: ok Liz: Are well all set today? Wayne: yep, thanks Liz: since you wish to return the device back to our facility, would you like to transfer your license to the old one? Wayne: yes Wayne: doesn't MagicJack pay for the return shipping? Liz: Okay, hang on Liz: Thank you for waiting. Wayne: It's stating that I need a MagicJack subscription renewal code to reactivate my old device. Liz: no it doesn't Wayne and you are responsible for return shipping charges to our return processing facility. Also please know that you will not be charge of anything for return the device since it is still under the free trial and yes you have to reactivate the old device for you to be able to make and receive calls.. Wayne: ok fine, I need the renewal code Liz: unfortunately, you do not have the renewal code Wayne however you may select the renewal plan and complete your order Wayne: I don't want a new plan since I'm already on an existing plan ending in 2015... I just want to reactivate the old device. Liz: I will be right with you. Liz: Thank you for waiting. Liz: I understand your concern Wayne but since you will return the new device, the license comes with the new one and cannot be transferred back. Wayne: YOU DID NOT GIVE ME A LICENCE FOR THE NEW ONE... remember?????? I am an EXISTING CUSTOMER and did not receive my free 6 months on the new device so I'm just transferring everything back to the old device. Wayne: I have 5 FULL YEARS PAID FOR so I am an existing customer with a working device... your upgrade wasn't as promised so just give me the code. Liz: One moment please... Liz: You are correct on that Wayne and you re returning your new device but as of this time we do not have a feature yet to transfer back your license Liz: and I understand but I believe that I have already provided you all the information needed; I will end this conversation now, if you any other concerns in the future, please do not hesitate to chat us back. Customer service didn't resolve my problems, their billing came at a surprise. They didn't want to reimburse my money and my subscription was a couple of days into renewal. Stealing my money if you ask me. Purchased my device at Wal-mart with the understanding I would only pay 19.95 a year, prices went up to 29.95 a year and you have to pay that extra 10.00 dollars to keep your phone number or your up a creek..... My service was completely interrupted with dropped calls, bad connections and not to mention that little voice reminding you to complete a process, why not an email or a letter. To end up with problems like this, I'm going to a competitor; this was just my first year of service.

Bought one of these units for our house in AZ. $39.95 at Walgreens. Upgraded to the 5 year plan. Started using the device, when suddenly could op longer call forward. Managed to email MJ and was given a link to use call forwarding, and was told it was being reviewed. Ridiculous (I told them). That was one of it's few features, and the reason to get it. Fast forward a couple of years, and was feeling that it was a good buy. Decided I would do away with my landline in Canada. Signed up online to order one. Went from $60 for 5 years in the USA to suddenly $178.00 for 5 years, with rush shipping. 2 weeks later no MJ+. Contacted them trying to find my MJ+. Was told that there is no rush shipping to Canada, that if I had read their blog, I would have known that they ship USPS, and when it gets to the border, they don't know what happens to it. I can (and do) have goods shipped to Canada in 2 - 3 days. Any other company would send it via FedEx or UPS. Not these robbers! I had already booked a holiday, so went away, and when I got back to Canada, found the MJ+ in the regular mail. Plugged it in as per instructions, and although I got a dial tone, no software downloaded, and no instructions on how to get it. Never could get hold of 'Live Chat'. It must be just a ruse. They would send BS stuff after a couple of hours and state that if I didn't respond within 1 hour, then I had to accept everything they said. I guess they think that we sit around waiting for them. Tried to have my local number ported to MJ+, but was told they could not do it in Canada. Funny how any other company in Canada can do it. There is just no customer service with magicJack. I finally got a RMA from them, boxed it up, and couriered it back to them. I will be going with a different voip provider in Canada

We had magicJack Plus for one year and used in WI and FL with great success. No problems with sound or call connection. It was great; would have recommended to anyone. Then, I forgot the mJ device when we returned to WI from FL this spring, so I called and got another device shipped to home for under $11. Great! When device was connected, we started w/the usual great service for severall hours. Then suddenly, device wouldn't work. Outgoing calls rang busy; incoming calls went to voice mail. Unplugging device for a short time and replugging worked to reestablish connection. Sometimes, connection worked for a day or two; at other times, only for a hour. We never know when/if we can make or receive calls. Customer service is cumbersome. We called customer service over a dozen times. Each time it was the same drill...over and over, each time with a different representative. Each time, we were subsequently referred to a Top 10% Service Tec. Each time the connection would work (we told them it would because all we have to do is unplug/replug the unit to get it to work). Eventually, they just told us all indications are we have a great connection so they just hung up ("Opps, connection has been lost"message) We give up

In the critical moment, when I tried to call to a clinic in my city with local number (605)-XXX-XXXX, a cheerful man's voice from Magic Jack recommended me to go to my.MagikJack.com and purchase some additional credit to make a call to this local number. I thought, probably it was only single exclusion. But, no. Most of my friends from my city are not available with Magic Jack too. The same reason. I tried to clarify this question via Magic Jack chat service. I was explained that in fact not all local and long Distance Calls are free. Only SOME of local and long Distance Calls are free. Another part of numbers requires to purchase some additional credit from MagikJack. The assistant recommended me to read Terms and conditions of their service carefully. When I tried to ask, why MagicJacks's advertisement and promisses do not correspond to their service, the online assistant terminanted our chat session... So, Magic Jack is not kind of company, you can trust in the critical moment

My callers could hear other people's conversations bleeding into ours. Very often when specific people would call, I would get nothing but dead air but they were able to hear me going, "Hello...Hello...?" Then I would have to call them back. Once, I had a memorial service at my house, so I had a lot of guests who had never been here, so on the invitations I gave instructions on how to use the call box in the lobby so that I could buzz them in. Half of those callers--including the Minister for the ceremony--called repeatedly and the phone never rang AND never showed on the call log. It happens quite a lot and makes me wonder how many other calls I've missed. There is no Customer Service phone number, so I've spent hours at a time chatting online while one idiot after another tries to "troubleshoot" my problems. I keep telling them that the only reason I have to have a landline is because there's no cell service out here, but they repeatedly ask me to do things like call my phone number from a different phone, etc. The MJ is set to EST and I'm on PST, so the timestamp on the calls was always 3 hours off, and the clock on the phone is also. Certain phone numbers that I have saved into my phone handset's directory and assigned to a speed dial WILL NOT speed dial and require that I look up their number and dial it the old-fashioned way. Sometimes that person on the other end can barely hear me at all, even though I'm speaking louder and louder. And I have a brand-new high-quality phone. At times, I've either restarted my computer or the internet has flickered or gone out for a second and I've forgotten to reset the MJ, so I've gone for long periods before realizing that I have not had phone service. Anyone who's tried to call me during that time is not logged, so I have no idea. Often the voice mail gets a glitch in it where it gives the menu options but will not play the messages

I bought an MJ plus, it is the worst piece of garbage I've purchased in as long as I remember. Dropped calls, distortion out of nowhere, inconvienence of local 10 digital dialing. Sometimes you need the 1, error messages, other parties voice will disappear, they call back and your circuits are busy, they can't get thru. Try using this for a job interview, NOT! No call forwarding, Caller Id doesn't show peoples names, just the phone number twice, why do we need that? Customer service if U can find someone to talk to. this is a horrible product! Will not renew at end of my year. I have great internet fast connection, never had a problem with my cable co phone, ever! Charge you to keep your old phone number, and then if U ever drop service there's a charge to port U to new provider! This PRODUCT IS TERRIBLE

MAGICJACK eventually will CHARGE BY THE MINUTE FOR CALL FORWARDING and $30 TO PORT A NUMBER OUT I PORTED IN!? SCAMMERS!

Anyway since when is there any drain on a phone provider to forward calls? That's clearly BS! They are out to magically jack you with service fees based on the service you may use or come to need! I chatted for an hour (the only customer support they have) and solved nothing. DON'T BUY IT

You can see I was angry after fighting with them for two days over charging me to port out my number because they suddenly cancelled the call forwarding feature. I need this feature for my business. Please wait for a site operator to respond. You are now chatting with 'Rodney' Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK1115301121147X Rodney: Hello, how may I help you? Dennis: Please wait for a site operator to respond. You are now chatting with 'Benjamin' Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK1115301119737X Benjamin: Hello, how may I help you? Dennis: Hi, I just asked for my MJ number to be ported out to another carrier and I received a bill from MJ for $30. What is that for? I just paid for another year's renewal of my account. Benjamin: I see. I'm glad to assist you with that. Benjamin: May I have your phone number and email registered to magicJack, please? Dennis: XXX-XXX-XXXX, abcdef.jklm@gmail.com Benjamin: Thank you. Benjamin: Be informed that magicJack incurs a port-out fee of $30.00, Dennis. Dennis: Why, when I just paid you $30 for renewing my account just to re-port it? Benjamin: The $29.95 is for the renewal of your magicJack device subscription, Dennis. Dennis: Yes, I was forced to do that in order to re-port that number. Now you want another $30? Benjamin: One moment please... Benjamin: I am transferring you to one of our top 10% agents as rated by our customers. Please hold while I transfer you. Please wait while I transfer the chat to the best suited site operator. You are now chatting with 'Nigel' Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK1115301119737X Nigel: Hello. My name is Nigel. To better assist you, let me put you on hold while I read your previous chat/s. Thank you. Nigel: Thank you for waiting. Nigel: You need to pay for that, Dennis to complete the port out request. Dennis: Why? The reason I am re-porting is because MJ took away the call forwarding feature which I paid for in the first place. Now I have to find another carrier that will do call forwarding. This is not a fair way to treat your customers. Looks like extortion to me! Nigel: I apologize Dennis but that is how the magicJack system was set-up. In as much as I would love to help you on this matter, however my resources are also limited. Dennis: Well, I will have to pay it just to get away from you guys, but it looks like extortion. I was a long standing customer of MJ but no more, and I won't be recommending MJ to anyone who asks, that is sure! Nigel: I know where you're coming from and I know that this is really frustrating. However, my resources are also limited. Rest assured that I will personally escalate your queries to the right department. Dennis: Is Nigel saying that I should hold off and not pay until this is resolved? Rodney: Please wait while I check that for you Rodney: Thank you for waiting, Dennis. Rodney: May I ask when did this problem start? Dennis: I went to renew my subscription with MJ and suddenly my call forwarding no longer worked. So I checked on it and the feature had disappeared from the MJ control panel. When I inquired about it I was told that it is no longer available. The only way I can now get this number to call forward is to port it out to another carrier. But now it looks like MJ is going to penalize me for that when I would not have been trying to leave MJ in the first place if they had not cancelled the key feature that I signed up for. Dennis: This is patently unfair and not the right way to treat loyal customers. Rodney: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you. Rodney: Thank you for that infomration. Rodney: Let me assist you with that, Rodney: ?Can you provide me with your magicJack phone number Dennis: xxx-xxx-xxxx Rodney: Thank you, Dennis. Rodney: Please wait while I check that for you Rodney: Thank you for waiting. Rodney: We understand how important the magicJack call forwarding feature is. However, the feature is unavailable at this time. We don't presently have any further details about this matter. We do expect the feature to be available again in the near future. Please check our website periodically for updates. Dennis: Are you going to charge me for re-porting because you can no longer give me the service that I paid for? Rodney: Is that for porting from magicJack to magicJack Plus or from a non magicJack to magicJack device? Dennis: No it is to another carrier that offers that feature. Rodney: I see. Rodney: You will be charged for $19.99 plus a 7.8% regulatory fee if you wish to port your number. Dennis: Read the script above. This is actually the 4th time I have been talking to y'all about this. Rodney: One moment please... Rodney: I am transferring you to one of our top 10% agents as rated by our customers. Please hold while I transfer you. Please wait while I transfer the chat to the best suited site operator. You are now chatting with 'Felyn' Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK1115301121147X Dennis: That is not what the email that I received from you said. It said that I have to pay a $30 fee to re-port. Please click here ( http://my.magicjack.com/portoutrequest.html?accountid=14306463andrsubscriberid= ) to complete the port out process. Dennis: Can you please read the previous transcript?!!! Do I have to go through all this again? The reason I am re-porting is because YOU have taken away the call forwarding feature. It was nothing I did! I have to move to another carrier to get this feature. This is extortion!!! Dennis: I paid for that feature, now you have removed it, and now you want to charge me to go somewhere else! This is unbelievable. Dennis: I was a loyal customer, but no more. I will not ever use MJ again, the way I was treated, and I will tell everyone I know about this! Felyn: We understand how important the magicJack call forwarding feature is. However, the feature is unavailable at this time. We don't presently have any further details about this matter. We do expect the feature to be available again in the near future. Please check our website periodically for updates. You may download the magicJack app for your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch and Android phones. You can use the same phone number and it that way, you will still receive calls even if you are not located in the same location with your magicJack device. Dennis: Don't give me that standard answer. Look at what Nigel said and respond to that please. Dennis: I have a Blackberry. We went through all this yesterday. Felyn: Thank you for waiting. I'll be with you in just a moment. Felyn: I fully understand how you feel. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do for it as this kind of process is system generated. Dennis: You can escalate this to a decision maker. This is really unfair, and the way I feel about it right now after two days of fighting with you guys, is that I will not keep silent about this. I will make this public. I really feel like MJ is extorting this money from me and has treated a longstanding loyal customer very unfairly! Felyn: I will be right with you. Felyn: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you. Felyn: Customer Contract To view the Terms of Service (TOS) click here or visit http://www.magicjack.com/tos/. Dennis: Ok, that confirms that Magic Jack is a company that does not care about their loyal customers. You have just put the nail in the coffin on this issue. I will follow through with my reviews of your service and it will not be complimentary! Felyn: Thank you for waiting. I'll be with you in just a moment. Felyn: I respect and appreciate your sentiments because I would feel the same way if I was on your shoes. However, please understand that a company policy is a policy that we need to follow at all times. Dennis: I will be posting this transcript online. Felyn: I will be right with you. Felyn: Alright

Magic JACK Deceitful

I can say for the most part I was happy with the original magic with all it's shortcomings. I bought a HP Thin-client to keep service running 24/7 without having to keep my full-blown computer running. Have had problems with the HP TC crashing at times and having to nurse the system back up. Don't know if the MJ is causing it. I was pleased enough at the onset, that I bought 5 yrs extra when it was $69.95 for the full 5 yrs. The reason I did not buy the MJ-Plus was because they would not transfer my extra years to the new device and it sounded like they'd even charge me extra to "port" my original MJ number to the MJ plus on top of losing all my prepaid years. That was the first stench that emanated from Magic Jack as being a sleazy business. The next foul air came from them blocking certain numbers. When I ported my Tmobile number to NetTalk (similar to MJ but run by an ethical company) MagicJack blocked calls to my NetTalk (same number that worked when it rang my cell phone.) So my terminally ill brother could no longer call me on the number I had been using for decades (originally Qwest wireless, then Tmobile and now NetTalk). SO I had to get a monthly cell plan for my brother so he could call me when he wanted.(Had I realized it earlier I could have set up a Google Voice number to forward the calls via a number that MJ wouldn't be blocking, but it's too late now.) Plus they can't tell you how much each minute would cost, if you bought prepaid minutes (which I refused to do on principle), even thought obviously their system must "know" the cost to be able to debit your prepaid balance. Another SLEAZY business practice. The next (and probably penultimate straw) was when their CALL FORWARDING option disappeared off their website. For a while there was a "work around" web page you could go to if you were lucky enough to find out how to reach it. The work around has since disappeared. Well luckily we were able to set up CF to his cell phone because he was in and out of the hospital so much. Then I learned that forwarding to a non-MJ number for more than two weeks violated their TOS and could result in his number being cancelled with no recourse (as no problems ever get solved by their abysmal excuse for customer service which consists of people who can barely communicate in English "chatting with you" giving you endless vague non-answers and eventually offering to send you over to "one of our top 10%" agents who is probably just another peon like the one you just got fed up with. For all I know their "agents" are merely bots posing as humans. If you do decide to port a number from MJ, you will have to find out your "MJ account number" so you will have to go to online chat to get it. (It was pretty easy to get, which surprised me.) Then your "PIN" is your login password but they converted all letters to uppercase, which is why my original port request failed. Luckily I was able to talk to a TMobile porting agent who helped me get the stalled port moving. When we finally got the porting data correctly submitted to MJ, the TM rep said OK it should be completed in 24 hours. Then he said "That's strange, they have put a 3 day delay on the port completion date." So I knew it would be completed by the 3rd day. Meanwhile, Magic Jack sends me an URGENT email telling me I have to pay $30 plus "fees" of another $2 to 3 to "complete" my porting out. Well I already knew the date of completion, so I ignored the email and didn't pay the $30 bucks. My port went fine but too late from my brother, thanks to the 3 day sleaze-ball attempt to extort 30 bucks from the fed up customer. And once Magic Jack has your money, you'll never get it back. The icing on the cake was when the founder of MagicJack was quoted calling his prime competitor NetTalk "a piece of Sh*t". That's got to be the epitome of sleaze

Please wait for a site operator to respond. You are now chatting with 'Michael' Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK************X Michael: Hello, how may I help you? ab: Hi. I was calling a number *** *** **** which is a calling card number. My magic jack phone is saying that I need pre-paid to call this conference line. it is not a conference line. It worked all these day until last night. ab: Good morning Michael Michael: Good day! I am glad to check and assist you with that. ab: are you there? ab: thanks Michael: Please wait while I check that for you ab: Sure tahnks Michael: Thank you for the information by the wat. Michael: *way ab: -:) Michael: Thank you very much for waiting. The it appeared here in our system that the Phone number you are calling is recognized as a Non-ILEC Phone number. Let me explain with this. Michael: One second. Michael: ILEC means Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier and is a type of local Telephone provider. An incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) is a local telephone company in the United States that was in existence at the time of the breakup of ATandT into the Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOCs), also known as the "Baby Bells." The ILEC is the former Bell System or Independent Telephone Company responsible for providing local telephone exchange services in a specified geographic area. GTE was the second largest ILEC after the Bells, but it has since been absorbed into Verizon, a RBOC. ILECs compete with competitive local exchange carriers (CLEC). When referring to the technical communities ILEC is often used just to mean a telephone provider. Michael: When you hear this voice prompt calling certain US/Canadian number, it doesn't mean that you cannot call that certain number. However, in order for the call to connect in that line, you have to purchase International Prepaid Minutes. It is because the number you are calling is identified as one of the following lines: Platform line, Conference line, Fee-per-call, or a Non-ILEC (Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier) phone number. You may wonder what are these type of services/lines. These are type of lines where "per-call toll charges" are incurred by telephone service subscribers that you are calling. ab: Okay I understand. Bur I just happened to search a rip-off report from another consumer by Magic Jack.I did not see it before subscribed to MagicJack. It worked all these days... suddenly not great. Thank you for your support. I am going to submit few reviees about magic jack so that others know about it and not deceived like me with fine prints. Thank you so much. ab: Now I know why vonage is admired. -:( ab: http://www.ripoffreport.com/r/magicjack/-internet-33405/magicjack-suddenly-it-costs-money-for-non-ilec-area-calls-when-the-calls-cost-nothing-972427 ab: Nothing personal. Michael: I do understand you Aditya and I respect your decision. Michael: It's just the phone number you are trying to call is a local U.S phone number and magicjack should call that phone number for free. However, when you hear the prompt that says you need to purchase a prepaid minutes to complete the call, the phone number that you are trying to reach may be a conference line, platform or under a non-ILEC area. This means that the phone service provider of the phone number you are trying to reach may have changed recently their lines from ILEC to Non-ILEC which magicJack has no control of whatsoever. As part of the magicJack's services is to be able to make free calls to US and Canada and some other international countries including Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands, hearing this prompt when trying to call a local number, magicJack incurs a cost from another carrier which is the carrier of the phone number you are trying to reach. As per TOS (Terms of Services), under Agreement Number 4: What is Free and What is Not, magicJack completes calls to conference lines, platforms and certain non-ILEC area calls in conjunction with large phone carriers and these calls require a prepaid purchase. Please know that these rates are at a substantial discount to Verizon rates and the other largest carriers and are the wholesale rates of the largest carrier

Everything is state in the "Cons" section. People may think it's okay if they have a cell phone as a backup, because just maybe they can use MJ sometimes. It cannot be counted on in an emergency since it does not work consistantly. I have seen other VOIP with better reviews. This product should not even be on the market. For some reason, the BBB says they are okay, because I think MJ tells them they have customer service. The real key is, do they resolve problems, and they don't. I can't call certain numbers. It leaves me stranded without a way to talk to my family back east. I have no cell phone back up. I rely on e-mail to contact people because MJ does not work. They've had me unplug it, give me links for upgrades, add on other MJ numbers and jump thru many hoops to change things on my computer to see if it will help and it never does. I have had this sevice for many years since I never really needed it due to having a cell phone. To count on it as a normal phone is impossible. As cheap as it is, if it doesn't work, it's not cheap at all. I'm so glad I didn't renew it for 5 years which was less than doing it year by year, because I plan to research another VOIP product and get MJ off of my computer. I don't even want to wait until the service is up, I can't. I can't talk to anyone. This product is a scam. It doesn't work. Anyone that says it does must be employees for the company. I was told if I got a laptop, it would not work. Well, it's not working now and I have a desktop computer. I don't know what's up with the BBB. This product needs to be pulled from the market

The customer service is chat only by people who don't have English as a first language, and are vague about where they are and what their native tongue is. MagicJack a Technician's Dream

EDUCATION: I didn't like the fact that a non-technical consumers (with little or no understanding of "Voice Operated Transmit" (VOX) and/or tight wad consumers (not willing to purchase decent internet service and/or a satellite phone system) are led to believe that this is a plug and play system. Consumers NEED TO KNOW that they must have a reliable high speed internet service IF they are, also, using their ISP (Internet Service Provider) for online gaming, streaming movies, have more than one computer connected online, and/or use a cheap low speed router or modem. Why? Because IF you have to wait for downloads on your current or previous system, then even MagicJack will suffer. MOREOVER, MagicJack needs a reliable power supply; especially IF they are hooking MJ to a hardwired whole house phone system. You cannot connect to your house phone wiring IF you have the old style ringer telephones (These old style ringers need about 70volts DC or more to ring), as it will destroy your power supply (especially MJ+). You can use an electronic telephone system with whole house wiring, but you MUST disconnect the ATandT or previous standard phone service providers telephone lines from your house before you can connect MJ to your house wiring. Choppy Sound is caused by too much and/or too loud background noise, which can be caused by loud children, a loud party, loud TV, loud music, and/or loud radio; and can, also, be cause by turning up the microphone volume control, which causes "White Noise" to interfere with the transmit switching. You see IF consumers knew that MagicJack works more like VOX radio transmitter than a two way transmit and receive phone system like a General Telephone System. This means that IF your MagicJack senses NOISE then it will try to TRANSMIT that noise; thus causing the chatting parties to "Break Up" or have a choppy conversation. Only ONE should talk at a time for best service. Consumer need to realize that a good quality 2amp USB power supply for MJ+, a high quality and reliable high speed internet service, and turing down or muting background noise will clear-up more than 90% of consumer problems

So i decided, ok I will let that old unit go and bought a new one. Same thing, but this time I really tried to resolve it 4 times and all 4 times same thing. They kept saying their mangers will get back to me. 40 days later today I contacted them and to no resolve and no refund. My conclusion just use another service provider because the owner does not care about the people as numerous complaints with BBB.org and website blogs are clear evidence that something needs to be done but not done

The reason for a home phone is to communicate, but I found it to be very difficult to communicate with this service because the sound quality is terrible on the receiving end. It sounds like a cell phone with very poor reception. The sound keeps cutting in and out. It is also next to impossible to actually speak with someone at Majicjack except through the internet. By doing so, they try to keep troubleshooting rather than letting you return the equipment for a refund. In my experience, none of the troubleshooting worked. The end result is that I wound up wasting a lot of money on the equipment that was never returned, and received a service that was basically unusable. I don't know if my experience is typical or not, but I would definitely not recommend this service

I would not recommend this product to anyone I know. They have poor customer service and they do not care about their customers. They have price changes and don't let you know until you have to renew, and then they refuse to give you the code to apply for a lesser charge, even though their site asks for it. They deny having a code. This company is shady

There is nothing good about this service, especially if you want to keep the number you currently have. They charge you $20 to port your number out from your current carrier and then when you decide that the service quality sucks so back that you can't deal with it anymore, they charge you $30 to release your number to a new carrier!! The sound/call quality is SO poor that I wouldn't even use it after about three calls where the person I was speaking with had to ask me to repeat myself every other sentence

They now charge for calls to conference bridges. If you plan to call into your company bridge, an interview call, etc. You have to pre-pay first. THey didn't tell ther customers this (at least not me), so we were blind sided. THis makes it worthless for me. Also the jack is to bulky for many usb prots and they warn that using the cable could reduce sound quality

Magic Jack has its good and bad. The good? You cant beat the price for one year. It's a heck of a deal for phone service but when It's time to renew your subsricption, seems that they wont accept your credit card and you cant pay over the phone which is ridiculous. I would much rather get another phone line from another company and not have to worry about my card being rejected simply because they dont know how to operate their method of payment system

The Bad:

I have to give Magic Jack credit for creating a service using high speed digital technology that actually works "most" of the time, and it makes a fine backup phone service. May not be entirely safe to use Magic Jack as the main phone line for a business - but I don't consider ANYTHING digital reliable enough to base one's livelihood on. On the whole I'm very happy with the price/service ratio, but will still eventually get a land line with a real cord so I'm not dependent on anything wireless or Internet-based

After trying a number of times unsuccessfully I returned the device and requested return of the $100 spent on a 5 year plan. I could never get thru on the phone to customer service. Use magic jack for the following reasons: 1.For your less important calls where you might want to talk for a while on the cheap. I like mine because I have a low usage cell phone plan and I use the magic jack if I want to have a conversation with family without worrying about minutes. Don't use magic jack for the following reasons: 1. If you have important calls. Magic Jack will often drop calls. 2. If you need a high usage phone line. Magic Jack will cut off service for high usage. 3. If you cannot afford to have your computer on when making calls. Magic Jack + now works with the computer off but sometimes it does not work well. 4. IF sound quality is important to you. The sound quality is only as good as a cell phone at best and sometimes is choppy. 5. If you want to port an important number to Magic Jack. It costs money to port the number in and money to port the number out

I started with one in 2008 it was good so I decided to use it for business and bought 5 more to manage business. Troubles started last August, when one of them needed to be renewed, I tried to add a year to my subscription and couldn't so I started to chat with a live agent. They told me that my account is under review and I CAN NOT renew it and I have to wait for an email telling me it is done and I can renew. sFor almost FIVE months they did not finish this endless review and the lines are falling one after the other. Now the main busines device has expired and I had several MANY numerous chats every time same reply like an automated answer Kathleen: ,as to what I've checked your account here in our database it appears that your account is still under our reviewing process by the desired representative and basically, that is the reason why you are unable to make any transactions in your account Kathleen: I can only imagine how this situation disappoints and frustrates you. We will work on this so that this issue will have a resolution as fast as possibl If anyone knows how or where I can complain and report this poor service, please advise

I renewed for 5 years for a great price, and then looking at my page it shows my service is good for 5 years out but then had a 'renew your number' button next to the phone number itself that shows it expires this month! I contacted support as mentioned above and when I demanded to know the exact words as 'proof' of the fee, he abruptly disconnected the chat and closed the conversation. I had copied and pasted the conversation to save and report to the appropriate agencies... Yes it's cheap, but if you port in your current number it'll cost you additional

First off their .ca site is not really .ca. Order off this web site and your item is shipped from darkest USofA by their postal service. Good luck? They add shipping (w/o mentioning this on their web site) so the $69 deal is $89. Then it gets held up at customs and you have to pay duty. The 30 day free trial starts when you order the thing, not when you receive it. By the time I got mine the 30 days were almost gone! So much for the 'free' trial. When I complained on-line to the 'customer service' line they said too bad that's the deal... if you don't like the terms send it back but it has to get here before the 30 days are up.. HUH??? Physically impossible unless I buy a airline ticket to deepest FLA. The thing is about the same as Skype except more expensive. If Skype could provide Canadian area codes Skype would be a no-brainer

I decided to give MagicJack (MJ) a try and got on their website to chat to a sales person. The sales person explained the fees and outlined the charges as: $69.95 for the MJ Plus device, $7.95 for shipping and handling, and $3.74 for regulatory fees, and $20.01 for keeping my current phone number for a total of 101.65 to which I agreed and gave him my bank card info to complete the transaction. Instantly I got an approval in my e-mail with those charges. So far so good. So then after getting off line with them I decided to check my bank to make sure the charges went through and that's when the fun began. I found they had charged my account for $249! So I got back on their chat website and spoke to a different customer service rep who then explained that the additional charges were for $99.75 for the 5 year plan, $44 for some sort of warranty, and $4.79 for more regulatory fees. I explained that the other rep and I never even discussed the 5 year plan nor the warranty and that I wanted those removed. She I had requested those charges?! So I asked her to remove the charges she refused saying the bank machine they have doesn't allow them to refund and credit peoples accounts, I told her she was wrong that all businesses can do that, after going around and around and getting nowhere I asked to speak to her supervisor. The supervisor said the same thing. So with the supervisor holding on line I contacted my bank, the banker said that all businesses can credit back wrongful charges, so after a asking the MJ supervisor a bunch of questions and not getting a satisfactory answer the banker transferred me to the fraud department. After more questions from the fraud department to the MJ supervisor the bank fraud expert concluded it was indeed fraud and they would reimburse my money to my account, void my card and reissue a new one and investigate MJ for fraud. So after 4 hours of headaches and then waiting 7 days for my new card to arrive it got resolved but not by MJ. In summary, stay far far away from MagicJack. And from what I've read from other reviewers it seems MJ likes to commit fraud...so be forewarned

I called up my mom, brother and sister in Hawaii, they all sound like I'm calling/still in San Diego, California. They dialed my number talked to them for hours, just like I have never left the US. I loaned it to my officemate and his family - they all said, they loved using it. I recommended it to all my officemates and friends. I'm so glad and thrilled I bought MagicJack. Unsuccessful Renewal of MajicJack

Now comes the main problem with Majic Jack. My year ended on July 1st, I tried to renew it starting July 13th (I live overseas not in the U.S.), since that date, I have 'chatted' to their online service it is more than frustrating. They have no idea what they are saying or maybe they cannot understand that my foreign credit card is not being accepted by their system. After being transferred about 5 times to the 'top 10 per cent assistance' nothing came out of it. Each time I call, I had to start the story all over, go through all the direction of trying to pay again, asking what the error message was, to be told call your credit card company. Well, when I tell them that my credit card company is accepting to pay the amount to Majic Jack, I am told that the finance office will e-mail me in 7 working days. Well, guess what, so many 7 working days have come and gone and no e-mails have arrived. Today out of frustration, I asked them if they just wanted me to go away, well you guessed it, there was no response, and then I was told: try in 24 hours. So I asked them what is the difference, they said maybe it will work. They expect majic from Majic Jack to play a role. Not sure what to do now, am about to throw it in the garbage and join Skype, might be better. In short their support is worse than horrible

I bought a magicJack online in November 2010. The unit arrived within ten days (don't remember exactly) and was in new condition. I followed the instructions and at first it wouldn't work. I hadn't added it to my Firewall settings. I live in London, Canada. I have a cable Internet connection with 12Mb/s. My first call was to Toronto, 120 miles away. The call lasted for about an hour. No problem. Since then, I have used my magicJack almost every day. Most of my calls are long distance. There was a short period when I lost a few calls. I did some investigating and found that my cable company was throttling my connection. They were treating it as peer-to-peer. They have since stopped. In 19 months of continuous use, except for the brief problem with my cable company (I'm sure they would like me to use their VOIP) I have had nothing but satisfaction. I've called all over North America and no problem. People on the line with me say I sound just like any other phone caller. Call waiting/display/voicemail works like it should. Haven't tried 3-way and likely won't. Because of BELL Telephone, I have to pay $10/year to keep my Canadian number, otherwise I would have to use the American number that came with the magicJack. There's nothing magicJack can do about it, and it seems to be a pretty petty way for BELL to be doing business. The magicJack is my only phone, so I can't take it with me. I've never had a cellphone and likely never will. When I go out, I enjoy my freedom and privacy. From my own experience and from what I've found on the Internet, I know these two things about the magicJack: You need a good high speed connection, and a multi-core processor is necessary if you want to talk and use your computer at the same time. I know that all the other VOIP companies don't like magicJack, and seeing the monthly rates they charge, I can see why. None of the other companies could give me a phone experience that's better. As good as, I have no doubt. Better? Not from where I'm sitting

Hidden Additional Fees, Poor Customer Service

Sound Quality Reliability Features Customer Service Price Overall User Rating
The Good:

The Bad:

I've had Magic Jack service for about 3 years. The first two years were pretty decent and the device worked well. For my first year I had the regular Magic Jack which required plugging it in to your computer. Of course when there was a power outage due to bad weather, I was without phone service. The quality of the calls was decent, but not the best at times. This year, we've begun to have a lot of issues with our device. The short cut on my desktop no longer launched the program and I couldn't get the service to work. I spent hours over several days trying to "chat" with customer service representatives that kept suggesting that it may be the extension cord attached to the magic jack that was connected to my computer that has caused it to fail. After trying everything, I thought that maybe it was time to 'upgrade' and purchased the Magic Jack Plus which does not rely on being plugged into your CPU or laptop but can be utilized with your Router. WARNING: Even though they SAY you don't need a computer with it...you do! You can't use the device until it's been registered on their site and that REQUIRES that it gets PLUGGED INTO A COMPUTER!!! The Magic Jack Plus isn't all that it's cracked up to be. All of the phone numbers that I had saved to my contacts list with my previous magic jack could no longer be seen. For example if Grandma's number was 867-5309, before I would have a customized list of all numbers received as well as numbers dialed and I could customize the numbers with a name, with Magic Jack "plus" you can't do that. Most recently I've begun to get messages when I pick up my receiver saying that my Magic Jack number has expired. I JUST renewed my service at 177.85 for 5 years to find out that NOW i need to pay a yearly additional fee to have my phone number the customer service rep "Bernie" says that 'vanity numbers' (which I don't have) are $10 per year and custom numbers, also known as regular numbers are $3 a year plus tax of course. These additional fees should have been charged at the time that I renewed or upgraded my service. not two weeks later. I wonder what additional fee's they'll think of next. I don't mind paying for service I just want businesses to be upfront on ALL of the costs and not to nickel and dime me after the fact. It's annoying and it's not the way business should be done. Many people have gone away from having a home phone service. But it you're like me and like for friends and family to have your cell and everyone else to have the home phone, then Magic Jack is not a bad deal, when it's working, and as long as you understand all of their fees ahead of time and don't have any expectation of excellent customer service

The Bad:

I got an email from Magic Jack stating that their MJ Plus device is half price and I can transfer my current MJ subscription (5 years) over to the new Plus device. I chatted with a representative, who told me that the new Plus device comes with 1 year, so I will get 6 years total of subscription (1 year with Plus device AND the 5 year subscription I paid for). Well, not 1. When I registered the new Plus device, it was just a transfer of my current transcription and it took away the one-year subscription that comes with the Plus device. So I basically paid $45 (device plus shipping plus some "fee") to get a new device, when the old MJ didn't bother me at all that it required a computer! When I chatted with someone, she told me too bad. And I would have to pay shipping to ship the MJ Plus device back during the free trial, even though their people screwed up and told me that wrong info. Then when I wanted to talk to a supervisor, she bumped me off the chat. I also had international minutes on my account, but apparently they expire after 6 months of inactivity. The first rep said she would "push" those minutes back to me. Never happened. The 2nd rep said it was not possible to refund those minutes or "push" back. She would make note of what the 1st rep said. But that's all she could do! What kind of company is this that didn't care about customer service? After reading the complaints here, I am afraid to send the device back even though it's still during the "free trial" period. I'm afraid I would never see my money and I would have to pay for the shipping. Plus I might not get my subscription back yet. UGH!!!!

I read a lot of the reviews and all of the bad ones have the same thing in common, dropped calls poor connection. All of these problems have nothing to do with Magic Jack and have everything to do with the quality of the broadband connection in their homes. I got this device in 3 days I plugged it in and it took 2 minutes to set up and I have been using it all weekend even made international calls, Crystal clear and stable. My broadband connections are very strong and my wireless is very stable. If you have poor signal coming into your home via your cable or you have an instable wireless connection your Magic Jack will be unstable. The magic jack is just a device that allows you to connect a phone via voice over IP thats it. If the service is bad the problem is with your cable service or your wireless network. Even the smallest amount of signal loss not notices while watching TV can cause this. I would have your cable guy out to sure up the signal strength of you broadband service. I did chat with the live customer care regarding administrative questions and they are pretty useless and the web page could use a makeover to be more customer friendly and easier to use to manage your account but I do like the product for me it works great. 911 is no big deal all VOIP servies have this problem in the power goes out. I always have a cell phone on me and unless you have a corded phone you still cannot use a lan line if the power goes out and you ahve a cordless phone. I like this so much i have ordered another for my family to use at thier house

I have done away with my regular phone company

The Good:

The Bad:

I bought my Magicjack about 4 months ago, I have done away with my regular phone company. I use the local and long distance service regularly and it works great. I like the fact that I don't have to pick up the telephone to answer when I'm online, I just click the send button and answer thru my computer speaker and microphone. The service sounds great over the phone handset also and with my wireless phone I get about seven hundred feet from my base with great sound. I have been telling all my freinds about MagicJack. It's possible that some people may experience problems, but they are probably related to running the dongle on an old computer with limited processing speed and memory. I also run serveral virus and malware detecttion software all running realtime and have yet to experience any problems as others have been complaining of. I don't even experience any lag on the programs I run. andnbsp

I had magic-jack and the customer service was the worst ever. They are based out of West Palm Beach. The service is not too bad for making long distance calls, but please don't call customer service for help.

You could effectively use magickjack as a replacement for manure.

Go out and grab yourself a rock, then throw out your phone and place the rock where your phone originally was, because it's more convenient than having these fucks taking care of your phone services. Seriously- fuck magickjack. Our phone hasn't worked for weeks and we have called them from other phones dozens of times and each time they put us on the line saying "oh we'll be right back" or some stupid ass shit like that and make you wait for hoouuurs while they look for the "problem." Magickjack IS the fucking problem. It's a scam, and a waste of your money. Don't buy it

If I could give it zero stars I would!!

I switched to magicJack with the assumption that the sound quality might not be as good as my land line service with AT&T and I was so wrong! It is 1000% worse. Every person I talked to on the phone complained about having problems hearing me and it cutting out. I checked with the MJ website faq's and did everything exactly as they said, even double checked with their lame customer support chat to see if there was anything I could do and I had done it all. I figured a month was enough, I was getting tired of my friends and family complaining and tired of the poor quality myself. Also, it may have caller ID, but it only shows the phone number and not the name of the person calling. Kinda pointless. Sooooo, since I had ported my number to MJ (They had given me a $10 credit from MJ & no admin fee to port my number from AT&T and no charge by AT&T) I wanted to port it back to AT&T. Welllllll, here's where they stick it to you. They charged me $30 porting out fee and a $2.34 administration fee!!!! Let me get this straight - their service sucked and I got stuck paying them to get my number back. I felt like they were holding my phone number hostage. I had a chat session with their useless customer support and they were no help at all. So, if I can spare one person from getting screwed by MJ I will consider it at least money well spent. All I can say is the higher ratings have to be paid for, or from the company itself. Buyer beware! Here's the bill: Item Description Details Qty Price Each Total Price Charge Date U.S. Phone Number - Port Out $30.00 $30.00 09/25/2014 Administration Fee $2.34 09/25/2014 Your Visa Card ending with (edit) will be charged: $32.34 on 09/25/2014
