So I've been a little relaxed on applying updates to my CentOS 7 cloud box. Figured this morning was quiet and I could run the update. Things started off fine, then it would die with destination unreachable, or too slow and time out. This went on and on and on. After trying many things, I wondered if it wasn't a throttle mechanism of iptables. I disabled iptables and it downloaded the 750 Megs of updates in seconds.
Long story short, if your yum updates are stopping (on 2020 PUBLIC), try disabling itptables momentarily. Just don't forget to restart iptables, or, if you're like me, take this opportunity to reboot the machine as well.
