There is a company called Seeburg which made a background music machine. This was similar to MUZAK. One of their most popular models was the Seeburg 1000 Background Music System which was introduced in 1959. It would play a series of records over and over. Then they would be changed out about every three months.

The company is streaming their entire music library for free. Even have an Android App. It is completely ad free, except for an announcement here and there, "Hi, I'm Eric Singer, drummer for KISS, and relax with Seeburg."

I guess they now make money selling CDs and memorabilia on eBay.

There is a playlist you can download to get their streaming URL. I went ahead and grabbed it and posting it here to use in your Music on Hold.

Type: Custom Application
Application: /usr/bin/mpg123 -q -r 8000 -f 8192 --mono -s http://74.82.59.197:8351/stream

Note: MOH Streaming is always streaming even when not being used.

This is really fun. Thanks for the post. I will have to do a test to see how much bandwidth is used per hour, day, etc.

Not hard to do that math. The "-r" is for rate and the 8000 is an 8k stream.

Seems this is dead for now.

They have switched to a service called Streema.com. It appears to use an API key to access the stream from looking at the player code.

Code:
_cos.push(['base_domain', 'clarice.streema.com']);
_cos.push(['username', 'webapp']);
_cos.push(['apiKey', '13fe509352910e5056f2ae8ca15e4008a6063ce4']);
_cos.push(['language', 'en']);
_cos.push(['source', 'webapp:prod']);

On a side note, I also visited Shout Cast and noticed a LOT of the listed URLS for music streaming are not valid anymore. I would say a majority. I wonder what is going on.

What I've done and has been well received was to upload royalty free Scott Joplin ragtime music, played randomly as Music on Hold. All of his music is in the public domain, including his automatic sheet rolls for player pianos. The Internet Archive is currently down due to hackers, but that would be a good place to look for recordings you can trust for the purpose.

It is important to note the piano player recording the music also has copyright over the performance, so you should double-check everything is truly copyright free. If a modern recording is from an old piano roll recorded by Scott Joplin himself, of course you can use that.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about, although this isn't where I collected my recordings a long time ago.
