Hello. Couldn't find anything related to SBC with Incredible/Public Cloud.
- Is an SBC (or SBCe) recommended and/or required for Incredible PBX on public facing cloud?
- What does an SBC do?
- Which SBC do you recommend and how should it be configured?

Why are you asking?

It does sound like a homework assignment.

What's with you guys and "homework assignments"? this forum is "voip-info" and it seems reasonable to request "voip-info" from such a place. if you don't know the answer (obviously you don't) then why insult the OP?

I obviously don't know what a SBC is? Wrong. But the reason I ask is that I have limited time and I am not going to be an encyclopedia to say all the virtues of a SBC and which I prefer and why, etc. etc. unless I know the scope of why the question is being asked and if I have some good knowledge to give on the subject. FYI - I never insulted the OP, I asked the question Why?

Shouldn't you be pointing to this very VoIP site for that?
Perhaps but the link was on the first page when I Googled session border controller. A quick read and it I thought it would be a good starting point for the OP.

The real problem is that page is out dated. SBCs can do transcoding and they can run in VMs while doing it.

Most of the information on this site is outdated. So unless there is going to be a huge effort in updating a big chunk of information, this site isnt very relevant to modern VoIP.

Again, this is why I asked their need / intention. I think if this is a homework project, than the link will for sure give a lot of good info and will probably suffice. If they have a specific use in mind, options may change.

We are interested in moving from an on-premises again Avaya IP Office to either Incredible PBX/FreePBX/Asterisk or FusionPBX/FreeSwitch. In all of the great info re: Incredible PBX, there's not one mention of needing an SBC - including in the recent posts about putting Incredible PBX on/in a Public Cloud. So, despite having read everything on Google, Ribbon, AudioCodes, or Sangoma, it's not super clear nor simple what it does, why you need it, what happens if you don't have it, and how you configure your Amazon AWS or other cloud set-up to account for it. There is this QuickStart from Riboon re their SBC on AWS: https://aws.amazon.com/quickstart/architecture/ribbon-sbc/ ---- boy does that look like a complicated set-up with a lot of moving parts. We are just looking for a secure, safe, reliable IP-PBX to host on AWS or another cloud, whereby all of our in-office and WFH and WF-wherever and WF-iOS apps can have access to the PBX on whatever physical or softphone they want. One of the main things that Ward covers is IP whitelisting - which doesn't really work in an WF-wherever/whatever world. So maybe an SBC helps with that... Thanks.

@summit: In addition to the IP WhiteListing platform with Incredible PBX, we also offer PUBLIC deployments which provide SIP connectivity using a disguised FQDN without the need for whitelisting. Works great for mobile and traveling workforces. You can read all about it for Incredible PBX 2022 (Rocky8) and Incredible PBX 2021 (Debian and Ubuntu). Our PUBLIC design mimics much of the functionality of an SBC with firewall packet inspection, port filtering, internationally-supported blacklists, country-blocking, and more.

Our preference is to provide access to your PBX using OpenVPN so long as all your phones, servers, and desktop computers all support it. See the Wiki for OpenVPN setup instructions.
