What's people's take on the easiest way to get SMS (real SIM card) to email done. What gateway would you recommend? Do you have your PBX handle the email or have you come across an appliance that can do it in your travels?

I don't want SMS enabled DID's - that's easy (and I do it) but I need a real SIM card based forward of SMS to email (I don't need reply). Too many issues with short codes working 100%.

So a quick answer is there is an APP for that, in fact there are any number of them for Android & IOS.

Maybe google "Cellular SMS forwarding app"

There is also a host based interface from inteliquent.com and a new offering from SignalWire where they get the SMS/MMS traffic and can pass it to you, but you do not need to move the DID to them. So for example an AT&T DID on a PRI can now be enabled for SMS while the Voice stay's on the PRI. Or a Verizon Cellular DID can now have the SMS/MMS delivered through SignalWire instead of to the hand set. .

Who's the underlying carrier they use for this?

I think it's less a question of carrier and more a question of service. I believe they are tapping in at the same point all inter-carrier message switching is happening and registering for traffic to your number.

Carrier as Asterisk knows it is SignalWire or inteliquent. Although in both cases I use Rest APIs to catch the traffic on my side outside of our Asterisks server(s) . I really have not spent any time looking behind the magic curtain for the wizard. .

I don't want to use a cell phone if I can help it, but I may well not have any choice. I'm looking for something more robust like a gateway. I'm also not looking for the latter solution. That will not always work with 2FA (not that SMS should be used for 2FA anyway, but it is so I'm trying to solve that problem). I have two people who need to share a single login due to inflexibilities at the service provider, because they can't grant two logins to the same account. It's dumb but it comes up now and then.

Like this but not 800 euros : https://www.smseagle.eu/

Then the only thing I am aware of is the HyperMedia solutions in the us..

Have you looked at Openvox they have 3G wireless gateways ?

I hadn't - their device looks like it works but it has 4 channels; I just need two - I will check the price anyway. Thanks..

Also check Yeastar gsm gateways they have smaller units, I have used there 16 port FXS gateways and they work great.

I had an OpenVOX T1 card many moons ago, when it failed it took more than a month to get a replacement cross dock.

In the US 2G and then 3G will disappear in the not to distant future. But due to Covid the target dates keep moving --

Typically, they'll need the SPID and then bring in the data portion. The reason I ask the underlying carrier is that they don't all play well with each other. Some won't be able to work properly with all carriers, such as bandwidth.

Yes, thanks, I am leaning that way. I just have to figure out how to get the PBX to take the incoming SMS and email it or at least deliver it to two extensions which I could connect to softphones with SMS support but I think there's a tutorial here somewhere for that.
