Media server

Media Server:

In a PacketCable environment (and other VOIP networks) a Media Server processes and generates media streams (usually RTP).

It handles functions like:

• decoding DTMF tones
• bridging multiple media streams into a conference
• playing announcements (e.g. “This number is not in service”)
• processing VoiceXML scripts
• speech recognition
• text to speech
• recording audio
• etc.

A Media Server is typically controlled using SIP messages sent by a softswitch or application server.
An IVR system would typically be composed of a Media Server and an Application Server.
