Important Notice!!

IMPORTANT! Please read before proceeding with upgrade to Release 7.2.

If you are running Rel 3 software, you will need to upgrade to Rel 4 prior to going to 5.0.0.21. It is strongly recommended not to upgrade through the GUI. Only the Boot (Set) upgrade should be performed if you are running software lower than 6.0.0.19.

Although account settings tend to be saved between firmware upgrades, it is recommended that a factory reset is performed at the end of the process. Phones not reset might suffer from miscellaneous issues, such as random SIP re/registration failures and phone setup Web pages not showing.

For all SIP Phone types running any software previous to Rel 7.2, this includes Rel 3.0, Rel 3.1, Rel 4.0, Rel 5.0 MUST upgrade to Rel 5.0.0.21 prior to upgrading to Rel 7.2.
Rel 5.0.0.21 MINIMUM is required as a stepping point up to Rel 7.2. Any other method of upgrade could result in corrupted Flash Memory on the SIP Phone resulting in a permanently dead phone.

When upgrading to Rel 7.2 from any previous software through the Rel 5.0.0.21, not all SIP Phone Feature/Parameters are carried forward. The Key Definition such as Shared Line, Menu Items, Feature Keys, etc. are not carried forward. (The only exception is Speed Dials, which are carried forward.) And Call Logs are not carried forward.

In general, it is important to upgrade the older firmware in sequence – eg: v3 -> V4 -> V5 -> V6 etc. without skipping any releases. Failure to do this (eg: upgrading from V3 directly to V6) may brick the phone.

View the Firmware Version

To view the firmware version using the Web Configuration Tool:
Access the Home Page of the Web Configuration Tool and click Firmware Updates.
To view the firmware version using the Superkey Menu Interface

  2. Press the Line 2 key. Both the main and boot firmware versions appear on the display.
  3. Press (SUPERKEY) to return to the default display.

Upgrading the Firmware

IMPORTANT! Please read before proceeding with the upgrade to Release 7.2.

  1. Save the config file to the desktop.
  2. Set up a TFTP server, if one is not readily available there are many shareware/freeware available on the Internet. Make sure that you write down the IP address of where you have the TFTP server running. You then want to unzip the latest release 4 build into the TFTP root of your TFTP server.
  3. Power the phone while holding down the * and 7 key to switch to SIP mode; hold down the keys until you see change confirmed on the set display.
  4. Assuming that the phones are using DHCP, power the phone while pressing the volume up arrow. You are now in the configuration mode of the phone. Navigate through the menus (Network parameters, modify static settings) until you see a place to change the TFTP server address. Enter the IP address of your TFTP server from step 2 above.
  5. Keep pressing the Down Arrow key and save your changes.
  6. While the set is booting you will see an option to upgrade via TFTP, select yes (You may have to press * for yes depending on the set).
  7. You should then see the firmware upgrading. Once complete you will see the date and time appear on the phone.
  8. Once the firmware upgrade is complete you then need to delete build 4 out of the TFTP root. You then unzip the latest release 5 build into the TFTP-root.
  9. Then simply repeat steps 4,5, 6 and 7. Step 5 is very important as the network setting returns to factory default after the update. Once release 5 firmware upgrade you may upgrade to the Release 7.0 Firmware

To upgrade the firmware using the Web Configuration Tool:
Access the Configuring Network Settings and Updating Firmware sections of the Administrator’s Web Configuration Tool.

To manually upgrade firmware in the phone via Web from 6.0.0.19:

1. On the Web Configuration Tool home page, click Firmware Update. The Firmware Update page appears.
2. In the Automatic Firmware Upgrade section, from the HTTP Automatic Firmware Upgrade list, select Off.
3. From the TFTP Automatic Firmware Upgrade list, select Off.
4. In the Manual Firmware Upgrade section, from the Choice of Download Type list, select the required server type (i.e. HTTP or TFTP). If you select None, then HTTP takes priority over TFTP.
5. Depending on the server type selected in step 4, enter either the URL for the HTTP Server or the URL for the TFTP Server.
6. Do one of the following:
(Recommended) To install the latest firmware but leave the existing phone configuration files unchanged, click Update. A confirmation screen appears.
To install the latest firmware and reset the existing phone configuration files to new default settings, click Update & Reset Config Files.
7. If you clicked Update & Reset Config Files in step 6, re-enter the SIP authorization password and the PPPoE and user passwords, if required. To re-enter this information, do one of the following:
Use the Web Configuration Tool
Use the phone’s Superkey menu interface (see “Configuring in the Main and Boot Programs” in the Online Help)
Edit a saved configuration file. For more information on configuration files, (see About Configuration Files in the Online Help).
8. Click OK.
Note: The boot program and boot menu only support IP format for the TFTP server. If a URL is configured, the URL will display as 255.255.255.255 and the boot program will not download from the URL.

To upgrade the phone’s firmware through the Superkey Menu Interface from 6.0.0.19:

1. Press (SUPERKEY), and then press >> until SETTINGS & OPTIONS? appears.
2. Press OK, and then press â–¼ until UPGRADE FIRMWARE? appears.
3. Press OK. CHOOSE PROTOCOL appears.
4. Press the desired protocol (HTTP or TFTP), or press AUTO. BEGIN UPGRADE NOW? appears.
5.Press CONFIRM. The downloading process begins and the phone reboots. This process may take approximately 1 to 2 minutes. When the time and date appear on the display, the download and reboot are complete and the phone is ready for use.

Notes:

  • On more than one occasion, 5220 and 5215 phones have upgraded from V1 and old V4 firmware to the latest V4 firmware successfully, but then have failed to download V5 (‘Checksum error’). These phones were subsequently taken directly from V4 -> V6 without any apparent problems.
  • If your tftp updates keep failing, make sure that in Network Settings ‘Local Tone Code‘ is set to a valid option – for example CA, US or GB. Also check in Advanced settings that ‘Language Code:‘ is similarly set (en_CA, en_GB or en_US). If not, set these options – it doesn’t matter if they are not correct for your country just as long as *something* is set – save your settings and try again. Also note that some country settings (such as en_GB are only present in later firmware versions).
  • An excellent, free TFTP server (for Windows) can be downloaded from here: http://tftpd32.jounin.net/.
  • Non-dual-mode (MiNet only) 5215 and 5220 phones cannot be ‘upgraded’ with SIP firmware (happy to be proved wrong though – if you manage to do this, document it here!).
