Quickly Remote Access Voicemail

Users can call in to access the voicemail boxes quickly, without having to enter their extension number. This is ideal for ITSPs where DIDs are mapped to internal extensions or DID number matches the extension, which takes too long to enter.

Place the follow line into your dialplan in the main local extension context:

exten => a,1,VoicemailMain(${EXTEN}@default)

How it works:

User calls their own number from an outside line (call 1-555-555-5555)
The DID 1-555-555-5555 reaches the destination Asterisk PBX and forwards the call to internal extension 5555.
After 20 seconds, Asterisk 1.4 voicemail system answers and plays the unavailable greeting message for extension and voicemailbox 5555
During the voicemail greeting, the user enters * on their keypad and the caller is directed to the voicemail access system
When * is pressed, the destination extension extension 5555 is noted and passed as a parameter to Asterisk cmd VoiceMailMain
- Had the user believed his or her extension number was 555-555-5555, they would not be able to access their voicemailbox
- With the destination extension parameter being automatically passed to VoiceMailMain, the user doesn’t need to know or remember their internal extension number
VoiceMailMain understands that the destination extension 5555 matches the voicemailbox number 5555 and simply asks for the password, without asking for the voicemailbox number
Once the correct password is entered, the voicemailbox 5555 owner can access his or her messages
