Siemens Phones

Three series of SIP phones are available – Gigaset, optiPoint, and (new) OpenStage. See the corresponding sections for more information.

Gigaset Series

The Gigaset series of phones is based on series of DECT phones using the same name. The handsets are identical to the ones for use in a PSTN or ISDN environment, the base stations have been enhanced to provide the additional functionality. They seem to share a common platform named ‘Chagall‘. The Gigaset IP phone series is targeted towards home installations. However, the handsets can be used in larger, Siemens Hicom based environments as well. There are three categories of handsets, C-series (value), S-series (full featured), and SL-series (full featured and smaller sized).

Gigaset C450IP / C460IP

The Gigaset C450IP is a DECT dual mode SIP/PSTN phone. It has been designed for the consumer market but it easy integration in Asterisk makes it very applicable to professional installations. As it contains LGPL’d software (libOSIP) one can rebuild the firmware with a new libOSIP.

Gigaset C470IP / C475IP

The Gigaset C470IP supersedes the C450IP, featuring an improved handset. The C475IP also features an integrated answering machine and supports 6 SIP account registrations

Gigaset S450IP

The Gigaset S450IP is similar to the C450IP, but uses a different handset and an almost identical yet more powerful (RAM/ROM size, CPU speed) hardware base.

Gigaset S675IP & S685IP

The Gigaset S675IP and S685IP seem to be a successor to the S450IP, it uses an improved handset and adds an integrated answering machine. The 675 was never officially imported into the UK, instead, the 685 is the same except for adding Bluetooth to the handset for hands-free and receiving contacts in vCard format. Compared to the S450IP they use an improved handset and add an integrated answering machine.

Gigaset SL75 WLAN WLAN/SIP

The Siemens Gigaset SL75 WLAN is not based on the DECT series. It is a Wifi telephone with a camera. You can also read e-mails with it or use it as an IMS. The device seems to be running Linux so it is probable that it will do much more than that.

OptiPoint Series

According to the datasheet and user manuals, the phones support standard SIP as well as features of the HiPath8000 system, but also BroadSoft and Sylantro can be selected (“server type”). For all systems, various business features are supported (keyset, call park, pickup, 3PCC…). The phones do not support STUN, but features like DNS SRV and survivability, QoS and extensive trace capabilities.
Actual application SW version is V7.0, unfortunately, there is no SW in the public download area…
A WiFi with SIP protocol is also available: optiPoint WL 2 professional S.

Provisioning and maintenance can be done by either the (free-of-charge) tool “Deployment Service” (this can be downloaded from their web site www.siemens.com/hipath) or by (XML) configuration files or via local menu/web admin pages.

Note that similar HW is available with the proprietary CorNet protocol as optiPoint 410 / 420 – without the trailing ‘S’.

So far only the OptiPoint 400, 410 and 600 come with SIP firmware. Other Siemens IP phones (OptiPoint 410, 420) use “CorNet-IP” which is a Siemens specific add-on to H.323. For Asterisk users, you might want to check out chan_cornet which can provide at least basic call functionality with this Siemens specific VoIP protocol. Note that certain “CorNet-IP” phones can be “upgraded” with a SIP Firmware.

LP5100 / optiPoint 300

You may find HiNet PL5100 phones in the used market which work with Asterisk.

optiPoint 400S

Some of the unique features include:

• A Deployment Tool — provides the ability to configure, upgrade or deploy hundreds of phones simultaneously;
• A free TAPI-based application that lets users dial from MS Outlook;

Some OptiPoint 400 Standard models are not truly 802.3af compliant. They are actually pre-standard compliant, and will not work with inexpensive 802.3af-compliant switches like the Netgear FS116PNA. These phones are, however, known to work with PowerDsine and Siemens HiPath PH 24 switches.

The optiPoint 400S is no longer available from Siemens.

optiPoint 410S

The optiPoint 410 S family starts with a simply 410 entry S model (w/o display), adding different features (like LAN switch, full duplex handsfree, accessory support) with the various models (optiPoint 410 economy S, economy plus S, standard S and advance S).
Some accessory components are available (key modules, display module, adapters), standards-based features like PoE (IEEE802.3af) and various codecs including the “wideband” G.722.
Applications (LDAP, local address book, WAP browser, call logging, Java VM) are supported on a b/w module. (The new optiPoint application module (with color screen and keyboard) seems to be available for the CorNet phones only).

There is a SIP firmware at http://chaz6.com/static/files/sip_v2_3_14.app -> This is an Optipoint 400 SIP Firmware not suitable for Optipoint 410 phones!

optiPoint 420S

The optiPoint 420 S family is matching the 410 S but the 420 S provides electronic labeling of the freely programmable feature keys (self-labeling key technology) – the keys/labels can be updated centrally by the admin or locally by the user – no work on paper labels any more…

optiPoint 500 Series

The optiPoint 500 Series looks similar to the 4×0 series but is a pure ISDN phone for use with Siemens’ HiPath PBX systems. It uses an UP0 interface.

optiPoint 600 SIP

Similar to 410, but using a backlit 320×240 pixel LCD. The phone has both a UP0 ISDN interface and a LAN connection for use as an IP phone. A SIP version is available, the firmware image is available for download. From the datasheet:

The optiPoint 600 SIP is no longer available from Siemens.

Openstage Series

Siemens most recent phones are OpenStage SIP. Four SIP (RFC 3261) models are available today, two low-end (20/40), and two high-end (60/80). All series can be managed using a web-based interface and/or the OpenStage Manager.
The 60/80 series includes a large color display (VGA / QVGA), touch-sensitive controls, customizable user-interface, LDAP and much more.

The OpenStage 60 and 80 will support external applications integrated into the phones user interface:

Auto-provisioning / mass deployment is supported by the Asterisk-based open-source PBX Gemeinschaft.
