In 2007, Polycom acquired Spectralink, the industry leader in Voice-over-WiFi technology. This acquisition followed Polycom’s earlier purchase of Kirk Wireless, a leader in DECT wireless equipment manufacturing. These acquisitions enabled Polycom to leapfrog into a leading roll in enterprise wireless voice communications and added to its already mature line IP voice offerings.
Polycom’s SpectraLink product line offers robust solutions for mobile voice communications that are targeted at corporate, government, retail, manufacturing & healthcare environments. By using WiFi, SpectraLink leverages investments in wireless infrastructure. Spectralink 8000 Series wireless telephones are compatible with WiFi equipment from many leading manufactures including Cisco and Aruba. Polycom engages in a comprehensive certification program to insure interoperability with wireless infrastructure. SpectraLink solutions are ideally suited for medium to large sized deployments that have complected coverage and roaming requirements.
Polycom also manufacturers the SpectraLink 8002 handset that is targeted at the SMB market. This handset works with most WMM QoS standards compatible WiFi Access Points and interoperates with a verity of SIP servers including Asterisk. You must have a WMM capable WiFi setup OR buy Spectralink’s black box to make these phones work.
Unlike Polycom SoundPoint IP telephones, provisioning is done via TFTP or more likely a Windows application talking over USB to a phone in a docking cradle.
Spectralink handsets support advanced text messaging features via the use of an external Open Application Interface (OAI) gateway.
