RBOC (Regional Bell Operating Company)

When ATT was broken up into 7 separate companies, each of the new geographically limited companies was referred to as a: Regional Bell Operatiing Company or RBOC.

The seven RBOCs were:

    • Washington D.C.


  • Bell South
    • North Carolina
    • South Carolina

    • Louisiana
    • Mississippi
    • Tennessee
    • Kentucky

  • NYNEX
    • New York
    • Maine
    • Massachusetts
    • New Hampshire
    • Vermont
    • Rhode Island


  • Pacific Telesis Group
    • California
    • Nevada


  • Southwestern Bell
    • Texas
    • Oklahoma
    • Kansas
    • Missouri
    • Arkansas


  • US WEST
    • Washington

These 7 companies have morphed into 4:
  • SBC
  • Bell South
  • Verizon
  • Quest

There is lots of history of the Bell system here

Now the term ILEC is often used to refer to these companies.
