Vonage vs. Vocalocity

Vonage and Vocalocity are Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service providers offering monthly plan rates for business VoIP services.

Vocalocity was recently purchased by Vonage and is now called Vonage Business Solutions

Vonage is primarily a residential Voice over Internet service with two business VoIP plans, including one unlimited calling plan. Vocalocity is a VoIP service provider focused exclusively on the small-business customer, offering hosted Public Branch Exchange (PBX) service and optional add-on services such as call recording. Both Vonage and Vocalocity offer business VoIP extensions.

Business VoIP Service Comparison

In their efforts to focus on the business VoIP customer, Vonage and Vocalocity each offer their advantages.

Vonage is primarily residential, but offers its small-business VoIP customers some unique perks:
  • In addition to its mobile VoIP apps for its business VoIP customers, Vonage offers the ability to use virtually any phone (excluding fax, 800/866 or virtual numbers) as a second line for free, and a second extension for $4.99/month. Vocalocity charges for each fully-featured extension (with direct and extension dial numbers), and you can have up to three phones on each extension.
  • Vonage subscribers can call anywhere in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico for free (Business Premium plan) or as part of their 1,500 minutes (Business Basic plan). Vocalocity calls are limited to the continental US and Canada.
  • Additionally, Vonage includes a dedicated fax line and 500 outbound fax minutes with both of its business Voice over IP plans. Vocalocity offers enhanced fax services as a fee-based, optional add-on.

Vocalocity is a turnkey solution focusing on small businesses, typically with less than 50 employees. Vocalocity features a hosted PBX, cloud-based service that enables the business voice over Internet provider to offer a wide range of advanced business-centered services, for free or for a small fee. These include:
  • Call flip
  • 2GB online backup/storage
  • CounterPath softphone
  • Call queue
  • Call group
