Eight years ago I bought an Intel Atom Nettop and installed PIAF on the SSD. Unfortunately it now appears to be dying. I am considering running my PBX in the cloud but it will take a considerable amount of time to get back up to speed on the technology. Is there a cheap replacement PC I can buy in the interim into which I can plug in the old SSD, boot it up and run my PBX until I'm ready to migrate to the cloud?

IMO, spinning up an IPBX 2021 instance on Vultr is cheaper and easier than installing on a new computer. $5 a month and less than 10 minutes. Vultr has it in their marketplace.

My ultimate goal is to do something like what you described, but it's been so long since I installed and configured a PBX system that I'm concerned it will take a considerable amount of time to get up to speed on it all over again. I edited numerous config files to tailor the Privacy Manager just the way I wanted it, whitelisting, etc. Is Vultr safe right out of the box? How different an experience is it from my days with PIAF?

IncrediblePBX2021 is secured upon installation. Only the IP address of your remote terminal you use to install it and a few major VOIP providers are whitelisted out of the box. Its pretty well locked down. There has been a lot of progress since the PIAF years. You would likely have to bring up the old and new system on your screen and do cut and paste as there is no real way to restore a backup from the old system onto the new. FreePBX has changed substantially in 8 years.

It is worth taking the time to do vs. buying something like a $500 Intel NUC and trying to stick your SSD into it and make it work (or not.)

OK, you've convinced me. I'll look into Vultr. Are there any other recommended providers? I apologize for asking this question when I should be doing my own research, but I'm in the middle of putting out a few fires and I need all the help I can get.

look for a promo link on this website to get free credit when you signup. referral link for Vultr

I'm seeing a "Get $!0 Free (VOIP CREDIT)" tag at the end of your postings which mentions VoIP.ms.

I signed up for an account and am currently following their setup checklist. The fun begins...

I have a Yeaklink W52P phone system that was hooked up to my on premises PBX. How difficult will it be to connect it to my Vultr PBX? Is it just a matter of changing the IP address of the extensions I had created and supplying the proper passwords?

You will need to change the IP address of the yealink phone to point at the public IP address of your Vultr instance. Also, you will want to change your Yealink phone to traverse NAT. I'm not a Yealink user, but on Grandstream phones I change the network setting to "keep alive" instead of "no" on the NAT setting.

Also, if your router currently forwards ports 10000-20000 and 5060, 5062, etc. to your local server, you may need to disable that so that the ports properly route out over the internet to the cloud instance (and back to the phones.)

I recreated one of my PIAF extensions in IncrediblePBX2021 on Vultr and was able to configure my Grandstream GXP2200 to connect to it. I then recreated a second extension, but I was unsuccessful in getting the Yealink W52P to connect to it. The fact that the GXP2200 can connect suggests to me that this is not a NAT problem, but if it isn't, why won't the W52P connect?
