I have lived with this for a while but now I am thinking an auditor will ask what this is and I'd flunk an audit if I don't know who/what this is considering we don't have any IAX users or devices.

Soooo what is this and how do I get rid of it?

They are the IAX ports to support free faxing. If you don't use faxing, you can delete them.

Make a backup copy first. Then clean out /etc/asterisk/iax_custom.conf and restart Asterisk.

If you found the thread on here about how to configure fax, you'd find it there documented in full and see how much effort it takes to put it in, so taking it out is SOooo much easier. Comment noted though.

I don't follow Krzykat.

Have a read of THIS thread. This shows all that went into getting the faxing working properly and the IAXfax modems that you are referencing. You can see that simply removing them as @wardmundy stated is much much easier than installing it in the first place. Most people don't care about having the additional iaxmodems there if they aren't using them, so having it there is the best fit for many that use it.

WOW - was that thread really 13 years ago ?? I've been doing this too long, just seemed like a few short years ago.

@herbertshades: The IAX fax devices are OFFLINE unless you deploy faxing. Not sure how much clearer that could be.

Telling folks how to delete harmless placeholders that are there for a reason is WAY BEYOND the project's scope. Then the next week, a new office manager shows up and wants to deploy faxing. You can guess the rest. He now complains that faxing doesn't work. Slippery slope indeed!
