I've just come across this website which offers alternative firmware for several Obi phones that have been affected by ObiTalk shutdown.
Since I no longer use GV I didn't try it, but it looks like the crowd sourced Obi2000 firmware (compatible with the popular 2182) is at par with the stock software version aka 6.2.3 (Build: 5330.1311).
If anyone tries it out, please keep us posted about the outcome. According to several posts that I saw on other forums the alternate fw works well but some people bricked their phones. So beware.

You =just= came across that website? :)

I've been using variants of that software on my Obi200 for years. Using it currently (3.2.2; Build: 8680EX-arrynrob10; currently 159 days of 24/7 uptime). And used it on my Obi100 before that. The alternative fw works extremely well and any brickage is, IMHO, exceedingly rare (and not necessarily caused by the fw.)

The person muchly responsible for a lot of those efforts (Naf) used to be a regular contributor to DSLReports before it folded earlier this year. Those of us using Obi products sans the Obitalk website owe Naf a huge debt of gratitude.

Sorry for my ignorance :willy nilly:
I only have a bunch of 2182 that I've been using as basic sip phones since the day (out of the blue moon) Google decided to take away my existing free DIDs. So I never really needed to flash new firmware to any of them.
But my son has a couple of the same model and he still uses GV with DIDs that he ported in.
He told me that the existing GV configs continued to work fine after ObiTalk's demise, but any modifications or adjustments through the Obi2182's web interface to those existing GV DIDs made them fail.
So, I started to look around and that's how I came across that site.
Since my OP he flashed one of his phones with the alternative fw and apparently GV lines are now configurable through the phone's web GUI.
I guess we should thank Naf for his efforts and his community spirit for sharing his work.

beware is adviseable, although there is a thread about that Obi2182

First an advisory - In the online Obi2000 series Obi2182 et al etc manuals it mentions the reset pinhole but there is none on the Obi2182, but what there is is a hole foe microphone sound-in on the lowest edge right hand corner below the speakerphone button. The method to reboot is via the Settings icon on the screen, which then shows the labels for the 4 buttons on the screen border area. The reboot button works fine. the FW Update however tries to find the latest stock update probably from the now dead ObiTalk. Anyway - don't mess with the microphone hole it may cause damage.

The method to install firmware however is via the built in web portal on http://<your-Obi's-actual-IPaddress>. default user/password = admin//admin.
From the navigation goto
'System Management > Device Update'
Then at top of page 'Firmware Update' Click Browse to locate your choice of (altrernative) firmware already downloaded to your PC.

... Anyway - don't mess with the microphone hole it may cause damage. ...
That reminds me of an old Motorola smartphone on which I poked and destroyed the upper microphone thinking that I was popping out the sim card tray
Since, I take a long pose and force myself to think over when I see a pinhole anywhere.

Teasing, of course. ;) :biggrinjester:
I knew it ;)

Here is a short note about Obi2182 firmware updating. which may be of interest.

Code:
Original stock firmware for Obi2000 = Obi2000-6-2-3-4946.fw (= Obi2000.6.2.3.4946.1311) NOT held.

Subsequentially loaded stock 4907

From stock 4907, loaded stock 4983 to allow reverting to taoman's 4907-signature-bypass
Then upgraded to Taoman's 5330 alternative FW from obifirmware.com
I noticed that

For the record I have some STOCK firmware files as follows, maybe they could be hosted in the repo somewhere ?>
Code:
Obi2000 series desk Phones
4946 ( as delivered but not available)
OBi2000-6-2-3-4907.fw
OBi2000-6-2-3-4983.fw
OBi2000-6-2-3-5330.fw

Code:
ALTERNATIVE FW from obifirmware.com

taoman - for OBi2000 series
Installation instructions:

    Install stock 4983.
    Install OBi2000-6-2-3-4907-signature-bypass.fw.
    md5sum OBi2000-6-2-3-4907-signature-bypass.fw = 24d0bcad8601d96b5f6b05120181c967
    Next, install OBi2000-6-2-3-5330-taoman3.fw.
    md5sum OBi2000-6-2-3-5330-taoman3.fw = c403c79f49e3694e72a40da93c770c01

Changes:

enable dropbear ssh server. default root passwd = "obi".
patch OBiapp to bypass "zero touch" forced configuration. added clear_zt_params util to clear old zero touch params.
patch OBiapp to bypass signed firmware check when loading new fw
patch OBiapp to bypass GVSIP provisioning lock
NEW: fix audio problem during conference calls
NEW: add Google Voice config instructions to webgui
NEW: changed GV AuthPassword override format to only require the refresh_token itself (backward compatibility mode is enabled if AuthPassword being with "client=" so no config changes are required)
NEW: make full root Certificate Authority list user-editable at /scratch/rootca.pem (by default symlinked to 2024-11-26 mozilla/curl root CA list from curl.se/ca/cacert-2024-11-26.pem)

Mod implemented using a new technique of adding code to the padding at the end of an ELF segment instead of overwriting functions inline, because this fw uses oauth in more places.

@ostridge : Do you have or know of a tool/method to extract the current firmware from Obi2182?

As the 'current' firmware is already loaded; then what version do you have.
Code:
To find current FW from the phone screen and click the (i) Product Information
Scroll to Software Version and get the 'Build number' =4digit-number.

It may be one of those I have over here.

Restoring ObiHai/Polycom OBi2182 for Google Voice

You basically need 3 pieces to get your phone moved to the open source firmware supporting Google Voice.

Start by doing a factory reset on the phone itself: Settings-> Factory Reset

Then download the original 4983 build for the phone from the Wayback Machine. This version didn't require checksums of future installs.

Next you'll need the Signature Bypass firmware to load the final piece.

Finally, you'll need the 5330 build from Taoman.

Last but not least, download this tutorial which will walk you through reconfiguring your phone.

Once you've activated a GV number, goto IP Phone -> Line Keys and activate the display for the Key and Service.

All of this should work until the next HP executive decides to further screw things up and delete the last remaining link to get Google Voice working on the phones.

Most of this is documented by Taoman here except it didn't include the essential 4983 build download link.

Many are still for sale on eBay for under $50. Great phone!

MAJOR TIP: Be sure to SAVE and REBOOT after every single step or Google Voice connection will fail. We proved it. :banghead:

A HUGE thank you to Taoman3 (aka 'PrimeRisk') and to wardmundy for restoring my Obi2182. I hadn't touched the settings in months and, apparently, I missed the memo where Obihai/Polycom/HP threw in the towel on the brand. Obihai deskphones and interfaces were the only GV-ready products anywhwere; so nice to have it working properly. My sincere thanks to wardmundy for laying out excellent guidance and providing the Wayback link. I would never have found that.

I registered for an account here just to say thank you. Like OP, I had seen the notice last year about dropped support but forgot to act till my obi200 GV line died.

I followed the steps above carefully and finally got back to a working GV line. I used to have PunchAlert E911 which was discontinued a few months back. I finally fixed that too using https://gv911.com/ - only $12 a year.

How to keep your Google Voice number active:
  • Place outgoing calls: Make at least one outgoing 3 min. call from GV number that is answered by the recipient.

  • Send outgoing texts: Send at least one outgoing text message that is opened by the recipient.

  • Avoid long periods of inactivity: The service requires one of these activities within a rolling 90-day period to remain active.

Does anyone have the details on the obiapp patches? The obifirmware listed for d230 by aa2k hasn't been updated with the latest patches.
