ALERT US prosecutors charge Atlanta man after GrapheneOS phone wipes itself during airport search

Interesting article. From this sentence [When he finally provided a passcode, the phone appeared to restart.] it would appear that an agent unlocked the phone wiping it clean. Just a thought.

The defendant gave the agent the code that would wipe the phone.
From Grok:

GrapheneOS includes a built-in duress PIN/password feature for this exact purpose.

You can set a secondary PIN or password that, when entered anywhere the device asks for credentials (lock screen, OS authentication prompts, or even as the two-factor fingerprint unlock PIN), irreversibly wipes the device (including any installed eSIMs). The wipe starts immediately, does not require a reboot, and cannot be interrupted.

This is going to be an interesting case to follow. I am not even sure what the "evidence" even would be.

Maybe The GrapheneOS devs should make a dual login where it shows items you don't care if anyone see it, and the very private items on another loging.

At the risk of causing trouble, it's been really interesting to this outsider to watch Americans capitulate some of their rights to their government in the name of safety. It's understandable given the impact of the trauma of 9/11, but I still find it remarkable there hasn't been a great deal of backlash on it. We're no different up north here of course, I'm not suggesting that, but it's just an interesting cultural shift I've seen over my lifetime.

<Rant>Many of us are trying hard not to capitulate our rights but the weak minded and those leaning towards Marxism disguised as Communism are slowly trying to turn us into a third world with the elites running everything. There are two generations that got "certificates of participation", useless degrees financed with government loans they thought they'd never have to pay back, and the basic belief that the government should provide them with everything. With each handout from the government, more and more rights decay as stupid people want the freebees and vote for those who offer them. These are the people with no situational awareness, lack common sense and have no motivation or work ethic. I just hope I die before our 250+ year experiment as a constitutional republic crashes down under the debt, stupid people, and useless younger generations. Of course, I'm not certain that you folks to the north or our friends down under are in much better shape right now.</Rant>

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
-Ben Franklin
Just remember that this quote was from Franklin wanting to tax the wealthiest family in Pennsylvania (Penn family) to help pay for the French and Indian War while the Penn family had offer a one lump sum to pay for everything under the condition that the Penn family properties where no longer taxed in perpetuity. Key note, they owned 80% of the property in the state, hence it's name.

It was "Tax the wealthy to get the money to pay for Pennsylvania's needs" vs "Accept one time payment at the cost of never taxing the wealthy for money for Pennsylvania's needs". The essential liberty was the power to govern and tax the people, including the very wealthy. The temporary safety was accepting a one time payout at the cost of governing and taxing.

In a nutshell, Ben Franklin was arguing for the right of the government to govern and tax ALL the people. It's not about freedom from the government in which the quote is used for in modern times. Ben Franklin wanted to tax the wealthy as equally as they taxed everyone else vs what happens today which is always giving the wealthy a tax break and exemptions to rule of law.

As for the marxism thing, kind of like the Franklin quote...it's out of context.
