OK, I am a bit confused here after reading many posts on Shared line appearance. Is this a feature that is available with PBX in a Flash using sip trunks, or is it not? For instance with the recommended Aastra 57i's can you set up multiple extensions to share the 4 lines on the phones and show them in use on another extension?

Shared Line Appearance is not a high point of Asterisk. You can set up busy lamps for lines or extensions to indicate if they are in use or not but you cannot share a line or extension between phones.

The Asterisk community continues to shoot itself in the foot against the larger proprietary providers like Avaya, Cisco and Nortel by refusing to embrace shared call appearance or shared lines. In fact, this post will likely result in flamers immediately saying the SLA's are stupid and unnecessary.

There is hope for this with another product, FreeSwitch (www.freeswitch.org) which is continuing to grow in popularity but still has no reasonable GUI with which to provision it.

Hi

In terms of PBX features and functionality, Asterisk scores over Freeswitch by a long margin, however, for speed and capacity for switching calls on a given piece of hardware, Freeswitch wins. However, development continues apace.
