I work for a mid-sized telecom and managed services company in the PNW. I want to branch out, grow my career, but I'm having trouble even getting interviews.

What strategies are actually working?

I like my job but I'm underpaid probably. Bills are somehow getting tighter year on year.

I haven't looked for work in years. So, maybe I'm just out of the loop.

Any ideas are welcome.

Applying online yields a 2–5% response rate right now.

To give yourself a better shot at getting an interview, you should do this:
  • Find a job posting you like.
  • Go to LinkedIn and search for that company’s Internal Recruiter, Talent Acquisition Specialist, or the Engineering/Operations Manager for that department.
  • Send a brief InMail message to that person:

"Hi [Name], I saw the opening for the Network Engineer role. I've spent the last few years scaling infrastructure for a mid-sized telecom provider here in the PNW and noticed your team is moving toward [specific tech]. I just applied formally, but wanted to connect to see if my background aligns with what you're building."

I agree with this take. Also, they can call into that company and leave a voicemail for that HR person, noting that you have applied already.
