DHCP and DNS

Hi All,

What a treat it is to have a solution that just works! Thanks to all that have put so much effort into this.

I have a question......

I want to make my PBXIAF a gateway on my network. So I am trying to understand the DNS, DHCP part and seem to be a little confused. Here is what I need: PBX to provide DHCP services for Aastra phones and DNS for local phones and network. I want the DHCP to reserve the IP's for the phones so that I know what they are.

Do I put a gateway in for the nic on the pbx or just leave it blank? I want the dns to cache all requests for external and only update itself when there is a connection pressent.

Do you truly mean a gateway? If so you need two network cards. One connected to your internet source and the other connected to your internal network. The you have to setup iptables to be the firewall and forwarder of the traffic. Can be done but much easier to just use a Linksys WRT54G or similar router.

DHCP: Regardless of the above, you can set this up. If you do not have any kind of network server (ie. Windows Server, linux server, etc.) then sure, setup DHCP on the pbiaf box and create reservations for the MAC addresses of the phones. That way each phone will always get the same IP as you want. Make sure to turn off DHCP on the Linksys router if you go that way so the two dhcp servers don't fight each other.

DNS: Just install and enable the caching-dns server that comes with CentOS. I think it is already installed, you may just have to enable it. I'll look when I get back to the office.

well, the issue is that I have to use a modem to connect to the internet. So, in essence, I have 2 network cards. This is for a couple of remote sites that do not have internet access. That is why I am struggling with the config on this.

Ouch! You are trying to push voice over a dial-up modem? I've never tried that. Bandwidth will be in question here.

No, not pushing voice over the dial-up.

I have sangoma for pstn connection. I just need to be able to provide support. that is what the modem is for. But I am trying to get it to send out reports at a scheduled time and then just update the clock and refresh anything that might be needed at that time.
