Browsing Ebay I find the HP DL360 G7 servers to seem attractive price wise, ie:
How many concurrent channels could such a machine run? 300? more?

Would there be something more cost efficient for a server for high volume? Like 300 concurrent
Would I need to split the load across many machines?

Of course there are questions such as transcoding and such, but ... Yes - that machine should handle 300 concurrent calls easily. I've got a similar box at a colo that I use for proxmox running many Incredible instances.

Well I settled on and ordered 1 of these:
I'm told it's overkill for my purpose (up to 300 concurrent channels a lot running MariaDB queries but no transcoding)
Hoping I didn't make a mistake as it is not like me to "BUY" computer hardware (as I get most of it for free or trade)
Anyone's input would be greatly appreciated...

At $200.00 US it's not like you're really splurging.

You haven't said anything about what these 300+ concurrent call are.

For a robo dialer no big deal.

But 300 concurrent calls! That would be a large call center with around 400 agents or a large
office building. Which is why your posts seem so silly. So down time would be more important and warrant even more then a initial investment of $200. If it was my call center you'd be out the door.

But... back to the point..... up time. Server grade systems. You'll have dual hot swappable power supplies,
you can split the ram and have redundant fail over ECC ram, fail over dual bio's, fail over CPU, add a couple more HD's
(not sure what controller is in system) and create a raid 5/6 hot swappable drive array with a hot spare or two. Fail
over fans. complete insite/lilo remote reporting of system healh, etc.... you get the idea, and if was me, I'd buy
a second one of those for just to have complete hardware swappable backup parts too.

for redundant system Proxmox would work great if you have at least 2 nodes, 3 or more is the optimal

It has the P420 RAID controller...it is not for a customer but a personal project I am working on...if it works out im looking at up to 300 channels in on a few DIDs and maybe 150 channels out through couple of SIP providers...no transcoding...all ulaw...large custom written dialplan and heavy use on MariaDB (many queries), recording and playback of sound files.
I have never done a "server grade" install before as my experience is small PBX systems (30 phones or less) on Pi's and PC's
Thus my "silly" questions....I have used software RAID before but never hardware RAID
The server has 2 300 GB 10k SAS drives so I figure RAID 1
I,d like to get 3 146 GB 15k and do RAID 1 with spare or ADM as I wont need much storage space
The server has 4 ethernet ports...I can't see any use for the other 3??? Any input?

and yes I would love to be able to afford (Yes, I'm poor and it cost $312 CDN in total) 2 of these servers (1 for backup kept offsite) and I am planning on doing so when and if the project works out but I can't justify over $600 just before Xmas (I have kids) on a project that might not work out.

I am aware of the redundant pwr supplies and have learned through route of the redundant BIOS but had no idea that RAM could be split like that and didn't realize that the CPU could fail over like that.....cool...more to learn...;-)

Oh and ext-104....love that name, gave me a chuckle...
