Hi, I've signed up for 1/2 a pri (15 cy ) from Vodafone Portugal. They actually use voip and I beleive asterisk on their end. The pri is supplied via shdsl line and the syncing is done with a thompson gateway. the gateway is in turn connected to a Datalfex Vine 6000, which would than be connected to my pbxiaf with a sangoma a101.

Since Vodafone Portugal uses voip, I can in theory (haven't tried yet) connect the thompson directly to my pbxiaf box and bypass the vine 6000 altogether.

My questions are:

1)are there any major benefits of either scenario?

2)Since I already have my pbxiaf with on nic for my lan and internet connection, how hard would it be to install and configure a second nic solely for the Vodafone pri line?

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

This is kind of like 'dedicated' SIP. In other words, the bandwidth is available just for SIP for your device. I have this kind of service from one provider, and aside from some DTMF issues that the provider has, the service is cheap and reliable.

It depends on the provider if they're going to be able to do what you're looking to do. I asked the same questions when a a similar proposal was given by a local cable company - why the heck would I want to covert SIP -> PRI -> SIP ? Just give me SIP and be done with it!

As for benefits - that really depends on your carrier. If they're used to doing this kind of thing, go for it. If you're the first customer, run away. Troubleshooting may be an issue if you're doing something non-standard as well (if a tech can't come out and plug in his magic box, that's going to be a problem for you).

NIC-wise, it depends a lot on how they deploy this solution. Each carrier is different - but most of the ones I've seen use real (routable) IP's, but keep the routing off to their dedicated network. So you would definitely want to put in that 2nd NIC, but you would have to manually put in the routing commands to push the traffic over that NIC to the provider.
