Outbound quality problem, inbound ok

Suddenly today I'm having outbound call quality problems - long delay, choppy audio when I place a call out. Inbound calls work great, never better. This is on a virtual machine that I've been using for months. The same thing happens on 2 different physical boxes, on all outbound trunks. I've made no changes to any Asterisk settings. Any suggestions on how to hunt this down? Why would incoming calls be ok but outgoing all messed up?

What is your outbound trunk? ADSL, Cable? Both are asymmetrical with big incoming pipes (download transfer rates) and small outbound pipes (upload transfer rates).

I would try testing your Internet access using one of the free online testing tools.

I'm on Comcast cable with good sized pipes in both directions (recently tested too.) Actually, the problem seems to have resolved itself, for now anyway. But it wasn't the audio in one direction that was the problem. It was when I placed outgoing phone calls, the audio was bad in both directions. Inbound phone calls the audio in both directions was fine. That doesn't make any sense to me so I'd still like to try to track down what happened in case it happens again.

I guess my point is that you need a baseline to measure. Test the line using several online VoIP tests while the line is good. Then when and if the line goes bad, then you can rerun the tests and compare.

It sounds to me like your VOIP carrier had a glitch on their end.
