I have successfully installed PIAF under VM Player on a WinXP host. I have run the update-scripts and update-fixes. I then discovered a time issue.

My PIAF time is about 7 hours behind my host time. I have verified that my timezone was correct using config.

I have downloaded the vm kernel version as per the Virtual Machine instructions on this site. I confirmed that I am booting to Kernel 2.6.18-53.1.4.el5vm. I rebuilt zaptel with only ztdummy.

The date is still 7 hours behind. Time is correct in WinXP and in the BIOS.

I have (cough cough) Trixbox 2.2 VM on the same machine and when I booted to it the time in TB was correct.

Am I overlooking something?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi

I've noticed that with my VMware sessions, PBX or others. Just go into the BIOS of the VMware session and set the clock correctly.

RESOLVED: PIAF 1.1 VM Time issue

Joe

Thank you for your timely advice.

I did not even realize that VMware had a BIOS. Guess it stands to reason that it would.

Pressed F2 on initial boot screen, changed to the correct time, and BINGO - all sweet. Just goes to show that sometimes you don't see what is right in front of your face!!

Thanks again.

Graham

SPOKE TOO SOON - Time drift

I spoke too soon. Now my VMbios clock is loosing time compared to my winXP time

UPDATE: Losing 4 minutes every 1/2 Hour

Looks like I am loosing about 4 minutes after 30 minutes of monitoring

This is a well documented issue.

The best thing to do is shut the VM down and edit the .vmx file and add the following line:

tools.syncTime = "True"

Install the vmware tools if you have not already done so. The reasons for the time drift are complex but if you are interested enough, VMWare have a few whitepapers on the issue.

No ISO to install VMtools from

Mat

Thanks for your reply.

I am using VMplayer so I do not have an iso to install from. Where can I get a copy of VMtools?

Graham

Hmm, not sure. I've only used the player briefly, how did you create the machine? From what I remember, player can only run an existing virtual machine that's been created using server. If you still have access to the server, fire the VM up in that. On my server, there's a collection of iso files for various OS's and they contain the VMWare tools. The one you want may be at:
/usr/src/vmware/vmware-server-distrib/lib/isoimages/linux.iso

Mat

I have looked and the file you advised is included in the VMplayer.

On my WinXP host version, it is located in:
c:\program files\VMware\VM Player\linux.iso

I will install and report my time sync findings.

Cheers

Graham
