TIPS PIAF Flavour comparison

Hi all,

This is my first post and while I did search in the forums and on Google, I have yet to find what I am looking for, which is surprising. Also, I hope I've posted in the right section of the forum.

I'm looking for details on the different flavours of PIAF that are available, and what flavour suits different configurations best, and why I should pick a certain flavour.

I currently have a server with RentPBX running Elastix, but haven't really used it to be perfectly honest as they don't recommend the web interface being enabled for security reasons, although that was the major reason I picked Elastix. They recommended PIAF, and so while I had heard about it in my research, I didn't know much about it. This was a few months ago, so I don't remember exactly, but I was reading up on Nerd Vittles about PIAF and Incredible PBX (since the fax capabilities are desireable, one of the other reasons I chose Elastix). The NV article seemed to suggest PIAF Purple but RentPBX suggested PIAF Brown.

I'm a Windows guy, learned DOS as a 2 years old, so not afraid of the CLI, but much prefer a GUI of any kind. I have limited Linux and Asterisk experience, although I do some support for it in the course of my work as a PC tech, but the GUI is still my preference, especially for more complex tasks.

So is there a comparison chart comparing the different flavours of PIAF? Which one would suit me best?

Just in case it's relevant, my VoIP provider is voip.ms, although the provider shouldn't make a difference.

Incredible fax works on 2.11 doesn't it? I thought I installed that on one of my virtual sandboxes at one point?

PIAF-Green with FreePBX 2.11 and Incredible PBX 11 and Incredible Fax 11 gets my vote. As lgaetz said, some of the articles are a little long in the tooth. We'll get some free info about RentPBX out to everyone early in the new year.

I won't be using Digium phones. Most likely lower end phones, or Aastra phones (one company I do a lot of work with provides only Aastra phones to their customers on their cloud based Asterisk PBX service, so needing to be familiar with those phones, and eventually Asterisk is part of my goal with this project). I will also have some ATAs (currently just one ObiHai device) and a few softphones (X-Lite, Zoiper, NCH ExpressPhone).

Any reason RentPBX would recommend Brown over Purple or Green? Or is it just based on out of date info?

wardmundy, you're the lead developer of PIAF right? I would assume you know which flavour to recommend better than RentPBX right?


I don't think I need to wait for more people to express an opinion here or ask for details on what the differences are to make a decision, although it would be nice, for reference purposes, to see a comparison chart to help make the right choice!

thanks, not sure why I didn't find that. That thread should be copied to the main site, or linked to from the site so someone can figure out which to choose, although a little more explaination might be good to go with it.
