The Raspberry Pi with 8GB is a very capable little board. I have been playing with it for a few weeks now. The different operating systems available for the PI all had or still have little quirks to deal with. So, I ended up by compiling my own version of Ubuntu + Xfce which work with the new USB booting BIOS and take advantage of the full 8GB of RAM.
In the process I also baked in a slimmer version of libvirt. As the binaries of virt-manager for arm were nowhere to be found (at least that's what I thought at the time) I also recompiled virt-manager.
As I was looking for a simple something to run on ARM/KVM for my tests I picked pihole (actually a major mistake). Another 20 hours later it was running nicely (with a couple of missing bits though).
Finally I needed a second "something" to run along, and I told myself - hey, why not IncrediblePBX??? - Another major mistake, but by that time I had lost track of the mistake-counter!
Eventually I got all the pieces together and the little monster works quite well! There are a few issues that need to be ironed out as some libraries still throw exceptions from time to time.
Troubleshooting is a massive pain as every bit of the software was recompiled from scratch including the older version of the PBX (12/13) that I am most familiar with at its guts' level.
But the bottom line is both (virtualized) pihole and Incredible PBX 12/13 are lightweight enough to run fine on an 8GB Pi with KVM.
My next step is to throw away KVM and move to containers. I'll update this post when that happens. Or should I say if ???
