Looks like T-Mobile is blocking SIP; however, IAX2 works fine with excellent voice quality using a VoIP.ms IAX2 subaccount with a registered FreePBX IAX2 trunk on a Raspberry Pi:

Exactly. We've got numerous T-Mobile phones that all work fine with SIP using either the phone or Personal Hotspot. This is a different beast.

Yeah, it's like ... weird. I mean during lockdown I did have a few people using home 4G/LTE Internet services due to their locations. Can't remember what carrier but T-Mobile/ATT are the two biggest in the area. The only issues we ran into with those people was lack of Ethernet ports to plug phones into.

It is also weird because blocking SIP (thus blocking competition) is a no-no. Did you test with alternate ports? Are they blocking SIP or are they blocking 5060?

At least 5060, 5061, and 5090 are blocked. 4569 works fine.

As for the SIP block, I bet it would work fine with SIP over TLS. I wonder what they are filtering other than SIP?

This would have been useful today. We are into the fourth hour of a rare cable Internet outage. It’s been reliable for years!

Well, you can't map any ports so that would be an issue. Using a Raspberry Pi with Incredible PBX and an IAX trunk connection to VoIP.ms is trivial for reliable VoIP telephony (now that VoIP.ms is back in operation ).

Except with major hurricanes that knock out all cell towers, I can see an important use case for this in emergency situations.

We're headed out on a road trip next week, and I can't wait to try it in the car to see if the handoff between cell towers is just as clean as with a cellphone.

I would agree, IAX2 needs one connection (4569) and for that trunk=yes should be best set in the config for a server , SIP, not so much ;-) You will likely need DDNS or preferably a working aaaa dns record for resolution though.

Been using T-Mobile family/military plan for years. The cost plus the extras make it unbeatable (if you have T-Mobile service where you live). Have thought about the $50 home internet deal, but am not clear on throttling traffic or if many users are online. Just two of us now teleworking and watching YouTubeTV. Sounds like your experience has been great so far.

Definitely a good and informative article. The only item I did not care for, was the high priced August Door Lock, but I don't have your bank account either. Lol

Being able to remotely lock and unlock your doors is a real game changer especially if you travel.

I agree being able to remotely lock and unlock the door is great, I have been doing that also. My wife even likes it because she can open the garage door, unlock the doors to the house, and turn lights on if needed while driving up the driveway and saying Alexa, I'm home. There are several other wifi door locks on Amazon that are a bit less expensive. Just a little tip is that you can also get the locks rekeyed so the same key will unlock the doors for all your locations. Just in case the batteries go dead while you are away.

I wonder if this will be suitable for failover internet for a business environment. Price is certainly right.

I use LTE now on Tmobile for failover. Of 129 locations 5 don't work on T-mobile for coverage (of which 4 are in Alaska so . . .). Works just great (Fortinet Firewalls and LTE USB modems)
