Latest version of VirtualBox, PiaF 1.4 ISO, host is XP Pro SP3. After hitting enter it goes through a screen or two of stuff, then freezes up after "NET: Registered protocol family 2".

Any suggestions on where to look next?

Solved my own issue. IO APIC should be set to Enabled. Oops.

More trouble, though. I'm stuck at "Determining IP information for eth0..." Once that finally times out I end up at a screen where I can choose A, B, C, or Q to install. Nothing works since I have no network. So I try Q, then piafxtras-menu where I've tried installing network drivers, but it still doesn't work. I just reboot and end up in the same place all over again. I've tried Bridged Network and all the different network adapters available in VirtualBox but no luck - same thing each time.

Right, Ward - that's what I was hoping would happen, but it doesn't seem to be working. The actual NIC is a Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) so I tried to install that driver in the PiafPreinstall menu, it shows as successful, then I reboot and end up back in the same place.

I run PIAF in VirtualBox. My network settings:

Adapter Type: PCnet-PCI II(Am79C970A)
Attached to: Host Interface

Select the adapter under Host Interfaces.

I do not have a bridged driver. VirtualBox will install it's own driver.

What version of VirtualBox? I'm running the latest 2.2.0 r45846. Same problem on both XP and Ubuntu. I'm trying Host-Only but they can't get out to the internet that way. Bridged should work, but no dice there either. What the heck...?

I just downgraded to VirtualBox 2.1.4 on my XP Pro machine and it's working. I dunno what's wrong with 2.2. Next I'll try to get it working on Ubuntu as well, which is where I really wanted it.
