What does a freepbx 'reload' do?

I have music on hold via the line in of my sound card. After any change in the GUI you get he orange bar asking for a reload. If I continue and reload, my Music on hold will stop completely. The only way to restore MoH is to do a 'amportal restart'
What exactly does a freepbx reload do? And is there a way to stop it from ending the MoH?
