NEW Free Oracle Cloud Instance

I am playing around with a new instance. I see setting a host name will reset upon a reboot. Oracle has a docs page on that very issue, but it seems to see how to resolve that issue, you have to have a paid support plan with Oracle to see it.

Anyone else got an idea?

I'm running a free E.2 instance with Debian 11 on Oracle and I have no issues setting the host name. I did have to manually edit /etc /hostname and put it there and (I think) in /etc /hosts. I don't know why it would be terribly different on Ubuntu A.1 instances.

The issue is not setting the host name, but it resets on reboot.

Even the Oracle docs mention this:

@KNERD, access your instance so you see this:

Scroll down the page and look on the left side for Resources > Attached VNICS:

Click on the link for Attached VNICs and at the far right of the VNIC, click on the three dots and select Edit VNIC.

Then you can change the hostname and reboot your system afterwards.

Thanks. I did not see that little menu hiding in the corner.
Thanks @kenn10. I blew away my instance 3 or 4 time because I forgot to set the host name and could never find where to change it. Fortunately that was before I installed the PBX.

That's an enormous amount of typing to be done.
As soon as you are at Alpine Linux, you could swap to Gentoo etc.
Yes, agreed a whole lot of writing, Arch Linux ARM has never been easy to install

The ARM A1 instances are now about impossible to get for free now. Either the have reduced the availble freebies, or too many people on there now.

Anyway, I am curious about pricing. Seems a little confusing.

If I am reading this correctly, you have to pay for two different prices. One for number CPUs, and the other for the amount of memory. Based on 730 average hours a month, looks like one would pay about $27 a month for the free one they have been offering with maximum of 4 CPUs and 24GB of RAM.

Does that seem correct?

Depends which country and AD you are trying, I always choose AD-3

Okay then how much does that translate to for an ARM server with 4 OCPUs and 24GB of RAM at AD-3 for a month?

Always Free cloud services

Services you can use for an unlimited time.

  • Two Oracle Autonomous Databases with powerful tools like Oracle APEX and Oracle SQL Developer
  • Two AMD Compute VMs
  • Up to 4 instances of ARM Ampere A1 Compute with 3,000 OCPU hours and 18,000 GB hours per month
  • Block, Object, and Archive Storage; Load Balancer and data egress; Monitoring and Notifications
so 24 hours in a day, x 30 equals 720 OCPU hours per OCPU, so 4 OCPUs will consume 2880 OCPU hours.
24GB x 24 hours x 30 days equals 17,280 GB Hours

and that's for the 4 ARM Ampere A1 Compute being used in one VM with max ram.
That's doesnt include the two AMD Compute VMs you can have.

I upgraded my trial account to pay-as-you-go. I was then able to provision a free really powerful (sort of) VM.
Shape: VM.Standard.A1.Flex
OCPU count: 4
Network bandwidth (Gbps): 4
Memory (GB): 24
I used the OCID: ocid1.image.oc1.me-dubai-1.aaaaaaaamjtlzd67o5r5jkmrrkgx4jv3zfjc4xymi5yn6rlyjxfljqxh6x3a
(found here)
This is all free. I can resize this to some ridiculous amount of OCPU count and memory for free.
