Just a heads up that we've changed the basic PIAF install for Asterisk 1.4, 1.6.2, and 1.8 beta5 a bit. All versions now include a preconfigured FreePBX so that individual modules no longer have to be installed. This was one of the major stumbling points for new users. Let us know what you think.

What modules are you pre-installing?

PS I think this is great!

hehe all the stable ones...... sorry could not resist! It is a basic load of all the main modules. Have not added any in the custom repo. It is enough to get started.

The real problem was installing freepbx with asterisk 1.8beta. It just does not work out of the box. We have made a few changes to make freepbx install however it will not install the base modules automatically thus why it comes preinstalled now. Worked so well for the 1.8 stuff we migrated it over to the other colors... Thanks Ward! There were some major rewrites also to some of our backend stuff to automate the install process some more.

We have a few other surprises coming we hope!

The FreePBX Update Module is installed but disabled for fear that it would encourage newbies to blindly upgrade without enjoying what already works. :wink5:

So wait....users will be unable to upload modules now? Such as endpoint manager? Or did you just disable the update portion :confused5:

Not sure I like either way. If you did just disable the update portion I can only imagine someone calling bandwidth.com for tech support and having to go through a few hours of costly tech support only to find out that you *disabled* the update module.

Are you now saying that you and darmock are going to be on top of security issues the day that freepbx comes out with security fixes? How will you apply these? Through update-fixes or update-scripts.

Please clarify...

Thanks

I meant the update module to move up to the next version of FreePBX. But the bandwidth.com module also is disabled since we don't support it. We haven't deleted any existing functionality. And, if you want to upgrade to the next version of FreePBX or use bandwidth.com, all you need to do is enable the module, both of which already are installed. Sorry for the confusion.

P.S. Our documentation will cover this shortly. It's only been two days.

Ok cool!

Sorry I got confused :smile5:

Also one advantage to this model is when we find (or others suggest) modules that would be a good thing to have <think endpoint manager> we can include it preconfigured and working! As you know sometimes adding something in the user contributed repo to freepbx can be a daunting undertaking. But we will take our time as this is a new way of doing things for the base install.

Ward has been using this approach since the early days with Incredible PBX and before. "It just works" is a slogan we love to hear.

Also a lot of the underpinnings of PIAF have been extensively rewritten and modularized to help ensure consistency in the way things work and what the user sees.
