FYI ChicagoVPS: OpenVZ VPS $7/mo.

i ordered the 2048 package and all has been very smooth.

the only thing i cannot get is the dummy dahdi to work for conferences. has any one had any luck?

the tap/tun module for vpn access was not available, but a quick email to support changed all that. these guys are really on top of things.

you cannot beat this deal for $7 per month.

W1ve, what versions are you showing on your status?

When you do status do you get this error /dev/mem: Permission denied
(scroll back)

Does it show that IPTABLES is running in your status?

Do you get errors when you do an amportal restart? I get one one from the stop and one from the start?

PIAF 1.7.5.5 ** RUNNING ON HARDWARE **
FPBX 2.8.1.4
Asterisk 1.8.2
Libpri 1.4.11.4

Same error when I do status: /dev/mem: Permission denied.
IPTABLES shows it is not running, but it is.

When doing amportal restart, I get:
/usr/sbin/safe_asterisk: line 68: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted

fI used these guys last year to host a magento server. I never had to contact support, so I cannot comment on that, and uptime seemed alright. However, I had an issue with my Paypal account right around the deadline to make a payment -- I contacted customer service, and informed them of my issues. Anyway, I ended up having to pay with an e-check, and it didn't clear for a few days. During that time I kept receiving overdue notices, and finally, right before the check cleared, my VPS was erased. I had a back up from a month before, but the entire situation really pissed me off. I don't think I could do business with them after experiencing that. In my opinion; avoid at all costs.

Current prices seem to be $7 and $6.50 with those links.

That's got to be a great option if it works well.... Anyone using it?

If anyone is looking, these are being offered generically (I don't think the PIAF image is there); I found this on redflagdeals (our fatwallet here in Canada).

FYI, I have had little success in the long term with these guys. I jumped ship over a year ago.

High ping times, several outages (one lasting all weekend), a complete backup and template loss at one point... The owner is a completely relentless jerk who doesn't care much for the low reliability and would say things like "what do you expect for $5/month" to me.

That was enough, but the real kicker was getting my account terminated for "piracy" when in fact, it was just an observium install that kept an eye on my other servers. I believe I just complained about the lack of professionalism and the low reliability, which pissed them off.

There are other LEB providers... I'd start there...

Here are some choice posts from their latest LEB offer, you decide:
Yup, got a black friday vps deal with them. It was terrible right from the start. Came back here and slickdeals and read the horror stories from several people. Learned about all the points Pub Crawler talks about (some didn’t happen until later in 2013) and promptly asked for a refund. They denied it of course and I ended up having to do a chargeback to get my money back. Thankfully when I asked for a refund they decided it was smart to cancel my server for me at the same time, made the chargeback easier.
you can do better then this place;
their support team is incompetent.
the price may look nice, but you really get what you pay for with these guys.
my advice it to look elsewhere.

Like everywhere else, you'll find some that love it and some that hate it...

I've had a VPS with them for quite some time that was used as a secondary DNS server for my network...but I'll be moving to a new VPS provider by the end of the month for this server.

Below are links to some items that have affected my decision, and only my decision. You're more than welcome to read through them to form your own conclusion.

I left them along time ago too. Periodically, the servers would just be taken down or would shutdown on their own. very messy operation over there. just google "chicagovps hack" and you get everything you need to know.

you get everything you need to know.

I already knew, but my previous post was moderated :) and unfortunately I haven't had much time to take action with my account over the last few weeks.

However, as of today I cancelled my single VPS with Chicago VPS and took my services to Burst.net where I ended up purchasing 3 VPS's to have some additional DNS redundancy (Chicago, Texas and LA) along with my primary dns server in Jacksonville.

For those that didn't know, RentPBX is a generous financial and technical supporter of the PBX in a Flash project. Not only are their servers far and wide but the special $15 a month pricing for PBX in a Flash users is hard to beat. Give them a try, and we think you'll agree with the rave reviews they have received in the PIAF Forum, some of which were lost in the Great Crash of 2013. Complete Nerd Vittles review is available here.

As the original poster of this deal, I'll tell you I loved them for a while, but have been gone for quite a while from the PBX side. I tried Burst, but ended up on RentPBX: Not as cheap, but rock-sold 99.999% uptime in the time I've been with them, very fast and great support; when I wanted to upgrade from an older PIAF to the latest, they gave me a temp PBX so I could do the manual upgrade without being down without cost... I 1000% recommend RentPBX. (I'm on their NJ site, and I get 1 mS ping times to voip.ms and Vitelity POPs!)

I still own a $12/year ChicagoVPS instance, which I use as a Linux playground. I don't care if it goes down and don't rely on it for anything important. (CVPS had another attack last week and everything has been down for a while.) I think that is why they have the STEALOFADEAL offer -- I think people are leaving in droves.
