1.4 and 1.6 to 1.8 upgrade tool

It might be helpful to have a relatively safe "update-version" tool whereby you can go from 1.4 to 1.8 or 1.6 to 1.8.

Certainly it could have some pre-requisites (ie you must have Freepbx 2.8 already installed on 1.4, etc) or some post-install issues (remember to upgrade your directories etc).

There must be a way though to handle this with some scripting, with of course an experimental moniker

Ward has said before that it's just not reliable and/or doesn't work period. I'm sure there are a bunch of prerequisite differences from version to version, plus different versions of Dahdi/Zaptel, asterisk-addons, and as Journey says, it goes "on and on and on and onnnnn..."

Yes, I remember, but there must be a way to do the stock versions (ie if you haven't touched anything; it's just the straight vanilla PIAF or IncrediblePBX) . . .

For sure though if it's not stock there's no way.

Well there is no point if the install is stock. Just re-install PIAF. I don't think it's worth it to code something like that (being very complicated to code) for nothing.

But on some of my systems where there's 100 extensions, that's pretty irritating to reload them all (and I could make *gasp* mistakes and miss something).

I'd like to see something that would at least carry over the extensions if nothing else. Those are usually the largest number of entries, and also are the easiest to fat-finger, even when copy/pasting.

There probably should be better migration tools in the Asterisk community that "parse" the existing data into the new version vs. trying to plug the data into the right files or database.

A parsing methodology could also be used as a different kind of backup method.

One of the real problems with open source development is that some developers don't mind throwing the baby out with the bath water when a "better idea" comes along. Many times you're left with an altogether new platform, new syntax, new verbs, new everything. Faxing with HylaFax and AvantFax is an excellent example. Moving to CentOS 6 was like switching from speaking French to Chinese. "Really Ugly" doesn't begin to describe it.

Bottom Line: You're left trying to fit the square peg into the round hole. Yes, it should be easier, and when I'm king...

Let's not forget the bulk-extensions export/import tool. There is also the bulk-did export/import tool. I always use that when I'm doing a PIAF upgrade to new release. Now if we could just get FreePBX to export and import the whole database correctly.....

The problem is that they keep refining the database structure which makes it all but impossible to do a simple backup and restore.

Yes, that's basically how I do it, then supplement it with the documentation I have for a few misc destinations and custom destinations.

This works fine. But it would be all the more awesome to have a turnkey upgrade path.
