Avantfax with Dedicated DID in Asterisk 1.8

I keep on seeing mentions that fax is dead on asterisk 1.8.

Is that only for fax detection? Or would I still be able to install avantfax for a dedicated fax DID?

I followed the directions found here: http://pbxinaflash.com/community/threads/hylafax-avantfax-for-piaf-parts-1-4.3645/ on my PIAF Purple install. Inbound and outbound faxing works great (I would say perfectly).

To clarify for anyone who is interested, Hylafax communicates with Asterisk using IAXMODEM, so the asterisk version is completely irrelevant.
