Cellphone number vs. Landline vs. VOIP

Any idea how a carrier like Sprint determines whether you have called a cell number vs. a landline number when it comes to their anymobile anytime free calling that allows free calls to any wireless carriers numbers? Thought I remember a thread that said Google Voice number show up as cellphone like numbers???

There are databases that follow the North American Numbering Plan (NANP).

In that data base besides who owns the number, there are flags for "Wireless" service types.
