hi I've been running asterisks for about seven years now i think I'm up to 89 extensions. Most extensions are remote through the internet.

The only problems i ever have is when the internet connection goes down.

so i was thinking of getting a dual wan fail over router and using cable internet and dsl.

but not sure how asterisk will handle it.
for example if my cable goes down and then my dsl goes up how will the default gw in the asterisk be affected
has this ever been done.

Works fine; two ways;

One is to use dynamic DNS, a low TTL, and have the server name for your asterisk server update automatically when the router fails over. I have done this with an RV082 from Cisco/Linksys and it worked.

Another is to get BGP running on the two connections, but that won't be supported on a cable and DSL connection.

Your asterisk server refers to the router as the default gateway.

Then all you have to do is worry about a failure on the router :wink5:

Is that all done by the router

and there is a nat setting on asterisks hav does it get handled

Yes, all handled by the router; Cisco RV082 and Juniper's can do this. I think also Sonicwalls but I dislike them myself.

No nat settings on the server except you should put in a script to set the externip setting (see the Nerd Vittles article on that).
