Fellow VOIP users and followers:
Though this 30-minute video from the Veritasium YouTube channel is not specifically about VOIP nor IncrediblePBX, the information contained in it should give us pause for concern ... panic anyone?

Can you you really trust your phone? or your service provider?

In the hands of persons with ulterior intentions, and with easily accessible software tools, SS7, which is integral to phone services worldwide can be hacked, and gives rise to tracking anyone from the common man to politicians both here in the USA and other countries. The vulnerabilities of SS7 have been hidden fruit for those who have intentions to undermine our sense of security in our telephonic communications.

Exposing the flaw in our Phone System: Hacking SS7

What is interesting about all this is the fact that 4G and 5G mobile networks don't use SS7 they use Diameter. In fact, 5G uses HTTP/2 for its signalling and not Diameter in most cases. That being said, Diameter does have its own security issues that can be compromised.

Though with the credibility of LTT in question and the fact that 4G/5G really doesn't use SS7 I'm questioning the validity of most of this video. I'm not saying the points are wrong but it wouldn't be as simple as they are making it out to be. It's definitely not just "pay some money and be a script kiddie with these scripts" type of thing.

Linus did say his phone would often be using 3G networks despite being in a larger metropolitan area.

Not sure how that is possible. All the main wireless networks in the US turned off 3G. The last carrier to have it was US Cellular and they turned it off Jan 2024.

Linus is in Canada, and they mentioned the EU still uses 2G and 3G for connecting modern vehicles.
I know in Mexico they shut that all down also and gone to full VoLTE.

Ya we're another year until 3G is turned off. We're not as spectrum constrained (smaller pop?) as I understand it so they're not in a terrible hurry, and our carriers are lazy.
