ALERT Fool Me THRICE: CloudAtCost

I can't believe they have the gall to show up again. The website is essentially the same.

There is no "about us" page and no contact information for them on the web site. This is smellier than the usual low end box scam.

The DC is in Waterloo in one of the old Blackberry offices. I don't understand I thought for some reason the fibernetics guys ran this but maybe not; they're a CLEC here they should be reasonably above board. I guess datacenter services aren't regulated though like telecom is.

This is the company who took our one year fee and closed without warning 3 months later. People could not even copy out their configs. You must have missed all the crap with them discussed in this forum.

Probably; I didn't remember them closing up shop - I remembered abysmal service and stuff not working then working etc. I have always been pretty skeptical of the ultra low cost - I do the math on the power / devices / space etc and nope out pretty quickly usually. 5 or 10 a month is a number I can afford (and actually in my case I have my own colo space / rented physical servers, but that's supported by a business model that needs them that isn't primarily telephony).

You must be thinking about a different company because cloud at cost has never disappeared. I started using them several years ago and have not lost any of the resources I purchased over the years. The two problems that I have had with them is their support sucks and they close the ticket without fixing the problem. The other issue was when they started charging a yearly maintenance fee.

Need a good morning chuckle? Here you go. This just arrived in my email...

@wardmundy, from some comments in this thread, apparently you and I are the only ones who remember the prior debacle with this company.

I've had c@c servers since @wardmundy first mentioned them.
The first few years were rough, no access through panel console or ssh at times, no internet access, rebooting the system would work sometimes, drives would be read only on power up, etc
Never knew they closed. Had to start paying the annual maintenance fee. Missed out on the free upgrade, then after upgrading and having to copy paste etc to the new platform they released a migrate system option.
"Knock on wood" servers have been pretty good lately. I only have ipbx2020, Unifi controller, and an UNMS controller hosted at the present.
So I think the ride for over six years has gotten me what I paid for $177 8CPU, 6GB, 100GB SSD

@islandtech: Count your blessings. We're in it for about $3,500. Let's see. At Vultr, that would have bought us 20 servers for 3 years. So we're a long way from breaking even despite the often sh*tty performance with zero support.

The good news is we maintain about a dozen honey-pots at C@C, and it came in handy to provide one to the ClearlyIP folks the other night to debug the Clearly Anywhere registration issue.

Five years for me, $104 (almost half of which was the v3 upgrade cost) for 6CPU, 3GB, 60GB SSD.

Lots of miscellaneous problems, support has been hot and cold for me, not a complete disaster.

For my needs it has been 110% worth it, and I haven't had to rebuild or reboot in several months (I know, I've just jinxed myself).

For VOIP? No way.

Not true .. I just think they suck enough and assumed everyone knew that I kind of tuned this thread out. I've mentioned before what I think of them and companies like them. If you want to play in a sandbox that you can't afford to have and you don't care if it disappears tomorrow, go for it. But if you have other options or for any business environment ... NO WAY

Another one here who totally remembers the prior debacle. I've commented often about C-a-C in the various threads.

My investment has been but a few shekels. All servers are treated as sandboxes. If they stop working, oh well. But, in my case they strangely mostly just chug along, and have for years.

Why would Fibernetics rebrand their existing business SIP trunking as cloud at cost? That's so weird. Maybe they're setup as separate entities altogether.

Incredible PBX 2020 TIP

If you're crazy enough to use C@C, be advised that their CentOS 7 repos are a mess.
Here's what you'll need to do after the base install finishes to get everything working:
Code:
fwconsole ma install pm2
fwconsole ma install ucp
killall asterisk
fwconsole start
systemctl restart fail2ban

Gotta love CloudAtCost for honeypots. 624 failed SSH logins in the 2 hours it took to set up this PBX.
