g729 first choice

I have downloaded and installed 1 g729a codec from digium for testing, my ITSP is set to allow g729 & g711, I set my trunk settings in freepbx for

disallow=all
allow=g729&ulaw

then I place a call and it uses ulaw, if I change the settings to

disallow=all
allow=g729

then place a call it uses g729. So my question is how do I make it use g729 first then g711.

If I check iax_additional.conf I see that
disallow=all
allow=g729
allow=ulaw

I was hoping that the order of listings would be the order of codec choice, if anyone knows how to set this order it would be of great help.

Hi

My understanding, and I cannot find where I read this, is that the codecs are costed or weighted, and Asterisk tries to avoid transcoding if at all possible.

So I am not sure you can set a codec order, all you can do is force one or the other.

You may get the endpoint to force a particular codec, but that would not apply in your case, as you have no control over your carrier.

You may have to decide to settle on one codec or another.
