Last night, we started seeing some Tweets from Google employees and others about a new Android-powered Google phone that was apparently handed out at an "all hands" meeting. Now Google is confirming that it is indeed "dogfood" testing a new Android device with employees around the world.
But this isn't just another Android phone. Very trustworthy sources who have seen the phone say that it is the Google Phone we first wrote about last month (despite the uninformed saying we were dreaming). It will be branded Google and sold by Google as an unlocked phone, which could change everything. As we wrote in our original post:

Nexus One

The Nexus One will launch in early January, 2010. It won’t be sold by any one carrier, but instead will be an unlocked GSM phone. In the U.S., that means T-Mobile and possibly AT&T, whose exclusivity deal with the iPhone is about to run out. It will be running Android 2.1


The phone runs on a Snapdragon chip, has a super high-resolution OLED touchscreen, is thinner than the iPhone, has no keyboard, and two mics. The mic on the back of the phone helps eliminate background noise, and it also has a “weirdly” large camera for a phone. And if you don’t like the touchscreen keyboard, a voice-to-text feature is supposed to let you dictate emails and notes by speaking directly into the phone.

FWIW, I installed SipDroid on my Verizon Motorola Droid and it seems to work just fine. I haven't done a lot of testing out and about, but it works here on the local network.

The million dollar question is whether the new phone includes support for the AT&T 3G network in addition to T-Mobile. They're on different frequencies. It'll be just about perfect if that's the case. Otherwise, I'm sticking with my unlocked Canadian (Rogers) Android phone which works great on AT&T's 3G network. The only drawback of the Rogers HTC Magic is it's still running Android 1.5 so none of the Google Goodies (navigation and goggles) are available.

I guess this means they aren't going to be strong-arming carriers into data only plans and using GV calling.

If I read this correctly, it doesn't look like the Nexus One supports AT&T 3G. The best it'll do on AT&T is Edge.

There's A Map For That

If You Think AT&T Coverage Is Bad...

Here's what you're buying into with T-Mobile in the U.S. Those tiny little dark purple dots are T-Mobile's 3G data coverage area. The medium purple is Edge. Ooo wee! You can have the best phone in the world, but it won't do you much good when it's dead as a doornail in over half of the United States.

SIPdroid Update

Just an FYI that SIPdroid pushed out the third update in as many days. This last one provides a quantum leap improvement in SIP call quality.

I have now both the dream and the magic now I have the dream rooted and loaded with some very sweet stuff
android 1.6 sipdroid of course a very nice wifi tether app and so many more goodies

the magic is plagued with the new firmware that rogers just released
the magic will be getting android 2.1 some time soon mid year Ward I know you have a N1 but rooting your magic is well worth it there are some very nice roms out there if your afraid to do it I'll do it for you just ship it to me

I'm very fond of my Motorola Droid on Verizon. The SipDroid program is adequate but still not quite ready for prime time.

Android 2.01 is leaps beyond 1.6 but seems to present challenges for some of the apps.

Verizon is going to have the nexus sometime in the next couple of months (supposedly.)
