Finally a configurable 7970 behind NAT which can be configured for remote use. Many thanks to Jack B. for opening my eyes to proper xml and to Kerry G. for getting my head outside the box!
1.) Insert SEP{macaddress}.cnf.xml file into t*f*t*p folder configured as follows:
pay particular to the various {PIAFexternalIPaddress} tags throughout the file - these should be the ip address for your PIAF server which is recognised by your DNS address (ie: myPIAFserver.net but in numerical form - 111.111.111.111)
Additionally, on the Nat line, be sure to input the ip address assigned by your dhcp server where the phone is plugged in!

see the next thread for further instructions (had to split it due to posting regulations)

cnf.xml file as follows:

2.) Turn on the phone. It will be searching to register - or may actually semi-register. Be sure to let it fully load the software and image - this can sometimes take several minutes. Once you see your lines (presumably with red x on them), do the following:

a) press settings (checkmark button)
b) press (2) Network Configuration
c) press (**#) to unlock the settings
e) press (24) Alternate t*f*t*p and switch it to the YES Position
d) press (8) for t*f*t*p server
f) enter the external ip address for your tb server in t*f*t*p Server 1 postion
g) save the configuration

If the phone does not reboot automatically, do so by pressing (**#**)

Make sure in the FREEPBX module your extensions to be used on this phone have the following set:

NAT=no
QUALIFY=never
save these settings in FREEPBX.

Your 7970 should work fine outside your home network with this configuration. Congratulations!
