R.I.P. Kazoo

I noticed there are not new promotions or advertising about 2600hz mobile. It happened suddenly; Does someone has some more details about it last 6 months? In the main web page that is not mentioned as active product.
 
No - but they are more than likely just being a MVNO. I don't think its the easiest thing and they probably just weren't seeing the required revenue to justify keeping it afloat. I know another company that operates as an MVNO that allows linking into your PBX.

What is this company? We are looking for this and would like to try GTI Global but they have not been responding to emails and have an answering service on their sales number.

That is a bit worrisome though if they are not responding to sales inquiries.
 
Hi, we are currently working with doing some modifications to the smartpbx app under the provisioner section (also done some of these on the Opentelecom's provisioner code). We added some support to other brands like Fanvil, ClearlyIP, Digium, Sangoma, etc. Note the 'Line Keys' and 'Feature Keys' that now appears after the miscelaneous line

The smartpbx app is now able to add the lines/feature keys directly from monster-ui. These features are continously tested and also preparing some additional documentation.

New to this forum and evaluating different options for a multi-tenant PBX project. Kazoo is very appealing to me for it's distributed nature and options for geo-redundancy among other things.

This thread is very interesting and informative, especially wrt to the current state of Kazoo as an open source project. In speaking with folks at 2600Hz myself, and just the general direction that they are headed, I really don't see them making 5.x publicly available anytime soon, if ever. That makes it really difficult to justify committing to their platform, unless you're willing to accept that 4.x is all that will be available to build from.

I am curious about those eager for 5.x what it is in particular that they are hoping for. Iow what is missing from 4.x that is expected in 5.x? If 2600Hz is headed toward closed-source to bolster their own hosted services, then maybe it is time for the community to fork and run with it themselves. Just really curious what those already using Kazoo would like/expect to see in a Kazoo fork going forward...

I agree with most everthing you've said. I've got 4.x setup with geo-redundancy, but still am not using it in production. I also am afraid that 5.x will never go open. Anyone that realy bangs on Kazoo forum about 5.x and OSS, they don't get treated with open arms, and in fact they might have their content monitored before they allow it to be approved.

I've spoken with a couple people about the possibility of taking 4.x, forking it and continuing. It's just a LOT of work.

Now - what does 5.x have that makes it better than 4.x that would be really great? To me, its the same thing that really begs for the source to be OSS, and that is the ability of haivng a store to buy, sell, and develop add-ons. The idea is that add-ons developed by others can be marketed and sold through the kazoo store, so you could just bolt on anything to it you want if you want to pay. Want to develop a new module? That's good too. Want to just develop it yourself for your own use? Of course, why not. I'm afraid that instead of using the store along with consulting as the monetization mechanism, they want to go with the hosting solution and charge per extension +++ ... when I asked about setup and running with their setup, you were looking at over $5K / month to operate it, making it only viable for very large players.

A marketplace for add-ons is attractive on many levels, I just don't see how 2600Hz would be able to monetize that to the extent that they probably need to in order to fund their growing organization if they were to open up 5.x to all. The way I see it is they would become the Google PlayStore of sorts for the Kazoo platform, where their only advantage is the convenience of a central marketplace for Kazoo operators. That's a relatively small group though, and there would be nothing stopping the direct marketing of Kazoo add-ons by developers if 5.x were OSS. So I really have trouble seeing how the ambitions of 2600Hz are not at odds with OSS going forward.

I agree that maintaining a fork of Kazoo would be a lot of work, and hard to say if there is enough interest and talent available to actually carry it forward. I would be interested in hearing from others that are might be willing and able to contribute. Perhaps just the threat of an organized effort contemplating a fork would be enough to push to 2600Hz to finally release 5.x?

I also wanted to share that in talking to 2600Hz sales about their hosted services, they stated that they are already running 5.x in their US nodes, and others were in the process of upgrading, so clearly it is already "production" ready. In fact US nodes are already running 5.1 (https://ui.zswitch.net).
 
As part of my own evaluation of Kazoo, there are a few requirements for my project that I haven't been able to find solutions for. Curious what others have found or are using for:

- device provisioning
- desktop and mobile apps
- messaging (especially SMS integration)
 
A person that can answer many of these questions for you and whom I work a lot with is @fmateo05 .

He's successfully gotten device provisioning working on 4.3 and I've got a SMS solution - just not well integrated yet.
Desktop and Mobile apps are always an issue and for now, I think the best solution for that is Acrobits if you have the time and energy to make it work right.
 
I think Kazoo 5 and their addon market will end up like their Blue.Box project.

They have not even put out a quarterly news release since July 2022.

Yeah, unfortunately, I don't have high hopes. I think 5 will stay private, and the only way there is OSS progress is that if someone forks it. I truly hope I'm wrong.
 
They had their KazooCon a few months ago without much fanfare. Videos are at the URL below, but oddly they are UNLISTED.

I guess they must be ashamed because there is really nothing to report about Kazoo. Not even their YouTube channel has 1000 subscribers.

Back to configuring my 4.3 demo system after a long hiatus. Curious if anybody has instructions they can share for configuring things like carriers, providers, payment processing, and bookkeeper. I especially want to make the “Buy a number” feature work, (preferably with Telnyx).
