Legible Captchas?

Yes, I know they're supposed to be difficult to read. But I've found the Captchas generated on this forum to be nearly impossible to read. It renders the search function practically useless.

I have to agree with this, but the thing I could never understand is why there is any desire to restrict searches in the forums. Many other sites don't put you through all that just to do a simple search. I can understand it if someone abused it at one time, but still, couldn't the offender's IP address be blocked or something without subjecting all other users to this inconvenience?
