I have a small Atom based setup, want to move the device to a new piece of hardware (also Atom, but different specs).

Can I simply move the drive over, will it work? I suspect not, but I have never tried such a thing.

Failing that, will the backup of the configuration & settings work when moving to new hardware?

We've had to do something similar with a couple of motherboard failures we've had in the past on some of the PBXs we have deployed. It really depends upon how different the specs are. Typically, we try to match the hardware as closely as possible. If we can't, we try to make sure that the new motherboard is supported well by Linux.

For the most part, the system should go ahead and boot. Mainly, where you may run into trouble is the network configuration (different MAC addresses, of course) may change or not work at all if CentOS doesn't have a driver for the network card on the newer system.

You may want to consider making a backup of the original hard disk to another device (Clonezilla/g4u can help there) before you proceed.
