I am trying to find out how I can send emails via TLS and not just port 25 SMTP.

On trixbox I could put in the account info of my Google Apps email, use port 587 and be done.

It doesn't really matter to me if I am using the Google server or the sendmail server built into my box, but my time is limited and would like to get this done quickly.

Is there any "easy" way to configure sendmail to use TLS? I am pretty much a newbie when it comes to configuring mail servers. If not is there a way to use my Google Apps account instead?

I have done a bunch of searching but admittedly have been somewhat overwhelmed with TLS and sendmail, mainly because I have never really setup a mail server before.

Thanks for any help!

I am using a Google Apps as (well, have used) an email sender on PIAF, as well as GMail. I just followed this thread.

Unfortunately that only seems to work on the standard port and fails on the cipher verification if 587 or 465 are used per the maillog.

The instructions in that thread has worked well for me in the past using those ports.

If you are using Google Apps you can use their smtp relay via port 25 with no authentication. Use aspmx.l.google.com as your smart/relay host in sendmail.

Well, the whole thing is I am looking for a secure delivery of email. It works just fine the way it is going out port 25, but that isn't using TLS.

Honestly, I've always felt this was overblown. Unless you are directly delivering mail to the final recipient, most ISPs don't bother using TLS, so the intermediate hops won't be secure. In any event, it is very unlikely someone is sitting at an ISP snooping the millions of mails that go by...

My box is sitting in my colo space with a direction connection to the internet, so I am not dependent upon a normal ISP to pass the mail along.

Secondly, there are a lot of email providers that do support SSL and or TLS and the people that I need to deliver these messages to have the ability to receive them as such.

But thanks for your input...
