Ward, that was one of those fancy NEW ones. We had this, and had to wait for the Can Can sale at the grocery store, to upgrade our old mobile phones... Txt Msging on these was too expensive..

This phone is "on-hook" but when the string is tight it is more like a "ring-down", you can add a "visual bell" with a strip of tissue paper over the "transmission" line.

Although food cans didn't exist until the very early 19th century, earlier implementations with conch shells and liana vines are assumed to have existed.

You would need to wait until 1830's for the first demonstrable text messaging system (we now call that a telegraph ) graphical mms not until 1846 (we call that a fax ;-) )
